In November 2022, my son’s mother and my ex-wife was tragically stalked and killed in her own home. The individual responsible was a retired 20-year military veteran. While we may never know whether his military experiences contributed to his actions, this tragedy has left an indelible mark on our lives. Some conversations are unimaginable, and having to tell my son that his mother was senselessly killed is a moment neither of us will ever forget.
In the wake of this devastating loss, I have chosen to participate in the 50 Mile March to raise awareness about the critical importance of mental health support for our military members. When veterans do not receive the help they need, the consequences can extend far beyond themselves, impacting innocent people in their lives.
I will never know if this tragedy could have been prevented had the individual sought mental health support. However, if there is even the slightest chance that the 50 Mile March’s mission can inspire one person to seek the help they need—preventing harm to themselves and others—then I am fully committed to this cause.
Through this effort, I hope to honor the memory of my son’s mother and advocate for the resources and care that can save lives and spare others from enduring such heartache.
