Why Snacks Matter in the Classroom

North Carolina is facing more than $30 million in cuts to schools and food banks, according to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. These funding losses are already impacting children and families across our communities.

When children are hungry, they can’t concentrate, retain information, or stay engaged. Hunger contributes to lower academic performance, more frequent illness, and behavioral challenges. Our vision is simple: no child should struggle to focus in school because they’re hungry.

That’s why we created PORCH for Schools—to get healthy snacks into the hands of students so they can stay focused and ready to learn. With the help of school social workers and generous donors, we stock every classroom in Orange County Public Schools twice a year.

Our Impact at a Glance

PORCH Hillsborough is a grassroots organization dedicated to fighting food insecurity in northern Orange County. In 2024:

Over 6,500 volunteer hours powered our programs
We distributed more than $625,000 worth of food locally
Since January 2025, we’ve donated over 23,000 pounds of food through monthly neighborhood drives
