No child should have to focus on their hunger instead of their education.

Through our PORCH for Schools program, PORCH Hillsborough provides healthy snacks directly to classrooms in 13 Orange County public schools and Head Start program. Teachers and school social workers keep these snacks available for students who arrive hungry, miss meals, or need additional nourishment throughout the school day.

For many children, these snacks are more than a convenience—they are essential. Access to nutritious food supports concentration, emotional well-being, classroom participation, and academic success.

The need extends beyond the school year. PORCH Hillsborough also provides snacks for students participating in the Duke Literacy Summer Camp, helping children stay nourished while receiving additional academic support during the summer months.

The reality is that hunger affects thousands of our neighbors. Nearly 20,000 people in Orange County experience food insecurity, including nearly 1 in 10 children. Many local families are struggling to keep up with rising food costs while facing reductions in government food assistance programs.
