Erin Edwards' Story

DEREK'S STORY Derek John Heath, affectionately known as DJ, is a person who radiates joy, kindness, and sharp wit. Raised in Lowell, Massachusetts, he is the son of Derek and Erin Heath, with younger siblings Kelsey and Logan. DJ has a deep bond with his extended family. His educational journey took him through the Reilly School, Sullivan Middle, Lowell Catholic, and Middlesex Community College, where he excelled in soccer, baseball, wrestling, and skiing. Beyond his athletic pursuits, DJ has a passion for music and travel. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic, starting his paper route at just 8 years old, working at Market Basket, and eventually purchasing his own condo in Dracut in 2021. DJ had been a dedicated employee at AG Centerless Grinding since 2017, until a recent illness forced him to take a step back. In 2022, he faced numerous challenges, including the loss of loved ones and his own battle with melanoma. Despite the emotional turmoil, the unwavering support from his family and friends was crucial, culminating in a successful surgery that confirmed the cancer had not spread. This period brought a renewed sense of hope and resilience. However, this was short-lived. In February 2024, DJ began experiencing persistent headaches, which eventually led to a collapse at work on February 23rd. The hospital visit was a turning point, as he and his family received the heartbreaking news that cancer had spread to his brain, lungs, possibly his liver and suspicion of melanoma. Following a 10-hour brain surgery to remove two tumors, DJ spent 10 days in the ICU. He started treatment with immunotherapy, but this was accompanied by severe side effects, including colitis and high fevers, necessitating a 14-day hospital stay. Subsequent immunotherapy treatments led to grand mal seizures and severe joint pain. Radiation and chemotherapy were eventually used to stabilize the cancer in his brain, offering a glimmer of hope for potential TIL therapy. This therapy will require at least two more weeks of hospitalization. Despite these significant setbacks, including the loss of independence and his previous way of life, DJ has found reasons to cherish the blessings. Throughout this arduous journey, he has demonstrated remarkable resilience, never complaining and always bringing laughter.
