Who we are

Filipinx Americans constitute 20% of Asians in the U.S. but only 4% of Asian American medical school applicants and physicians. CYFAM (Council of Young Filipinx Americans in Medicine) was founded in 2019 to promote leadership development, reinforce the educational pipeline, and embolden future physician leaders to address health inequities. As a national network of pre-medical undergraduates, medical students, trainees, and physicians, we are dedicated to representing the intersectional identities of Filipinx Americans and aspire to be effective change agents in tackling the most pressing health priorities in our community.

What we do

Since our founding, over 900 individuals participated in our events across the United States and worldwide; we held 40+ workshops; and fostered new relationships within our communities. In February 2024, we successfully held our annual conference fully in-person in Los Angeles. We have continued to explore and establish partnerships with organizations that address the unique challenges faced by the Filipino American community. This year, we are working with the National Council of Asian Pacific Islander Physicians (NCAPIP) to increase vaccine engagement. We have also hosted events for educating students, such as a virtual interview skills workshop to tell our stories better.

"Bakuna Muna: Protecting our Communities through Vaccination" - a virtual seminar hosted by CYAFM in collaboration with NCAPIP and the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) featuring Dr. Homer Abiad, an Infectious Disease physician based in Chicago, IL, and Dr. Elvy Barroso, recipient of the 2024 PAFIOO Banaag Award for her work in decreasing tuberculosis within the Filipino community.

MISSION • The mission of the Council of Young Filipinx Americans in Medicine (CYFAM) is to promote the leadership development of young Filipinx American physicians and trainees, reinforce the educational pipeline, and address structural inequities in health through advocacy, scholarship, and community partnership.

VISION • CYFAM’s vision is to embolden physician leaders to amplify the voice of our members, patients, and community. We will unify the diverse lived experiences of the young Filipinx American physician community. We will equip and empower every Filipinx American medical student, trainee, and physician to be an effective change agent in tackling our community's most pressing health priorities.
