Recovery Update • July 24, 2026

When we last shared Penelope's story, she was in a race against time after suddenly losing the ability to walk.

Today, we're grateful to share that Penelope is already showing encouraging signs of recovery.

The first milestone wasn't a dramatic one.

It was a wag of her tail.

To most people, a wagging tail might seem like a small thing.

To Penelope's medical team—and to everyone who has been following her journey—it was a beautiful reminder that healing had begun.

🩺 Emergency Surgery

Penelope underwent emergency spinal surgery at the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital.

Following surgery, her neurologist shared encouraging news. The disc material causing the severe spinal cord compression had ruptured only recently, confirming that Penelope's paralysis had occurred just days before she entered rescue.

Because CRF acted so quickly, she received surgery at the best possible time.

The surgery went very well.

But as her doctors reminded us, recovery from this type of injury is measured in weeks and months—not days.

💛 Every Small Victory Matters

Over the next several days, Penelope continued giving everyone reasons to smile.

❤️ She began eating well and happily taking her medications.

❤️ She was able to urinate on her own with sling support—an encouraging milestone her medical team hadn't expected so soon.

❤️ Feeling began returning to one back leg...

❤️ ...and then both.

With every small milestone, Penelope's neurologists became increasingly optimistic about her future.

Recovery is still in its early stages, but each day has brought another reason to hope.

One thing became very clear during Penelope's stay at the University of Florida—she captured hearts everywhere she went.

Penelope has already begun integrative rehabilitation, including laser therapy, as she continues taking those first important steps toward recovery. And yes...we all agree she looks absolutely adorable in her tiny protective goggles!

Recovery from spinal surgery involves much more than an operation.

Every therapy session helps support the healing process and gives dogs like Penelope the best opportunity to regain strength and function.

Each day brought gentle exercises, careful monitoring, and patient encouragement.

Her doctors reminded us that healing isn't measured by giant leaps—but by many small victories that gradually build upon one another.

Just days after surgery, Penelope was already taking her first assisted steps with support from her rehabilitation team.

Watching those first tentative movements filled all of us with hope.

🏡 Recovering at Home

After several days surrounded by the incredible neurology and rehabilitation teams at the University of Florida, Penelope was ready for the next step in her journey—a quiet foster home with an experienced CRF volunteer where she can focus on healing.

For the next four weeks, her days will be carefully structured around recovery.

She'll spend most of her time resting comfortably in a crate or exercise pen, venturing outside only for short, sling-assisted potty breaks and the gentle exercises prescribed by her medical team.

The weeks and months ahead will be devoted to rest, rehabilitation, and celebrating each new milestone.

Every small milestone matters, and Penelope's dedicated foster family is committed to giving her the time, care, and encouragement she needs as she continues taking one hopeful step at a time.

Now safely settled into foster care, Penelope continues her rehabilitation surrounded by patience, love, and encouragement.

Penelope still has weeks of crate rest, follow-up appointments, rehabilitation, and healing ahead of her.

But thanks to your incredible support, she has something even more important:

She has hope.

Every milestone she reaches is possible because friends like you made it possible for CRF to say "yes" when Penelope needed us most.

💜 Every dog who enters Cavalier Rescue of Florida deserves a new beginning.

For three-year-old Penelope, that new beginning was tested almost immediately.

CRF was contacted after Penelope suddenly began limping. By the very next day, she could no longer walk.

Learning from another recent spinal emergency, we knew time was of the essence. If Penelope had suffered a spinal disc injury, there would be only a short window in which advanced diagnostics and surgery might give her the best chance for recovery.

Our volunteers sprang into action.

Penelope was immediately secured into rescue and rushed to one of our trusted local veterinarians for evaluation.

After examining her, he suspected a serious spinal injury and urged us to get Penelope to the University of Florida Small Animal Hospital as quickly as possible, where a specialized neurology team could perform advanced diagnostic imaging and determine whether surgery could help.

By 6:00 the following morning, Penelope was on her way to UF.

An MRI confirmed everyone's fears.

A ruptured disc between two vertebrae in her spine was causing severe compression of her spinal cord.

The damage was significant, but because it had happened so recently, the neurology team believed surgery offered Penelope her best chance.

By 4:00 that afternoon, Penelope was in surgery.

❤️‍🩹 We were in time.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 to help cover Penelope's emergency hospitalization, advanced diagnostic imaging, spinal surgery, follow-up care, rehabilitation, and recovery.

Every gift—large or small—helps ensure that when a dog like Penelope needs lifesaving care, CRF never has to hesitate.
