Event description: Bike the Pike is a 18-mile bicycle ride beginning in West Chester, Pennsylvania and ending at The Yard Pub in Havertown, Pennsylvania. The bike ride will begin at 12 PM at Marshall Square Park. Each year T-Shirts are made to spread awareness and all proceeds go to the KCNT1 Foundation. At the finish line, The Yard Pub has wristbands for drinks, and a DJ from 1-4 PM. Bike the Pike then has 50/50 and raffle baskets to raise money to donate towards the KCNT1 Epilepsy Foundation. History of Bike the Pike from Tyler Higgins:

Bike the Pike was started while recovering from a shoulder injury due to football. I spent a lot of time on the stationary bike and came up with the idea to bike from my house in Havertown, Pennsylvania to West Chester University before the first day of school my senior year. The main route between West Chester and Havertown is West Chester Pike and is separated by a distance of roughly 18 miles. I decided to make T-Shirts for the event and called it Bike the Pike. In 2018, I biked solo as a fun challenge to bring our friends together to kick off the school year. The following year, I had moved to Florida but my brother Dylan carried on the tradition and biked by himself as he also attended West Chester University.

In 2020, I had moved back home and we slowly began to grow in size. We had 6 bikers including my brother and I and we rode from our house in Havertown to West Chester. We barely raised a few hundred dollars because we were still doing it simply for the fun challenge of the bike ride.

By 2021, my brother and I both had graduated from West Chester University and our cousin Lauren’s daughter, Leighanne, had been battling with KCNT1 epilepsy. We decided to use our event, which had been growing interest amongst our friends, to raise money and donate to KCNT1. We now had a new motivation and vision for Bike The Pike. We decided to start the bike ride in West Chester and end in Havertown at the Yard Pub to gain interest of more bikers. We jumped from 6 to 20 bikers. We included a 50/50 and had raffle baskets donated by friends and family. All together we raised over $2,000 which was donated to the KCNT1 foundation.

With a new purpose of Bike the Pike we began to take more pride in our name and our event. We began to spread the word even more. In 2022 we took another jump and doubled from 20 bikers to 40 bikers, including the first group of females to bike! We once again ended at the Yard Pub and with more people interested and participating, we raised $6,700.

In 2023, we once again had 40+ bicyclists participate in the ride on the pike. We added additional merchandise for purchase with proceeds going towards KCNT1. We had a massive increase in donated raffle baskets. Thanks to everyone that contributed, we raised over $14,000!

The KCNT1 Epilepsy Foundation is dedicated to finding treatments (and hopefully a cure) for pediatric epilepsy caused by a mutation in the KCNT1 gene. It can cause seizures that do not respond to traditional anti-seizure medications and can take away a child's ability to walk, talk or ride a bike. We aim to locate every patient and researcher in the world and bring them together in a collaborative manner to develop new treatments for this devastating pediatric epilepsy.
