Story

Founded in 2021, Pride Frisco is the first-ever and the sole 501c3 public charity based in Frisco, Texas, supporting the LGBTQIA+ community in Frisco and the North Texas area through social and educational events, scholarships, professional resources, and strategic partnerships with supportive or affirming organizations.

Frisco, Texas is the fastest-growing large city in the United States according to a 2020 analysis from the Census Bureau (over 71% population growth between 2010 and 2020 with an estimated population of 220,000 for 2022). 30% of our population is under 18 years of age, and over 50% are parents. There are over 66,000 students in Frisco ISD. A 2022 Gallup poll stated that 1 in 5 from the Gen Z population identifies as LGBTQIA+. While Frisco is ethnically diverse and economically vibrant with corporate relocations and a strong workforce, it lacks meaningful support for the LGBTQIA+ community, especially it comes to youth and their families. Pride Frisco was founded to fill this unmet need in our community and the surrounding area.

Pride Frisco is a volunteer-based organization with no paid staff. We depend upon financial donations from generous individuals and businesses to bring vital resources, social and educational events to serve the unique needs of our community. Beyond in-kind cash contributions, we fund our operations by fundraising through selling branded and unbranded pride merchandize.

Pride Frisco aims to provide our programs at no or low cost to participants because we know that access to high-quality, affirming LGBTQIA+ programming can be burdensome to families of LGBT+ individuals. Pride Frisco-hosted events are open to everyone, except where restrictions apply for age appropriateness, safety, and/or privacy reasons.

Your donation will be used to fund our operations and programs that provide LGBTQIA+ visibility, awareness, resources, and support to an underserved community with critical unmet needs in the fastest-growing urban area in the country. Please see below the types of programs Pride Frisco provides.

Affirming Community Events & Alliances: Currently without a permanent home, we partner with supportive businesses and organizations to co-program family-friendly events on a monthly and ad-hoc basis, when resources are possible. Also, we put on events in public settings that are intentionally inclusive and affirming. These popup events are usually within the Frisco area.

Below highlights a few events we have hosted and participated in:

  • Rainbows Over Frisco: Pride Frisco hosted our first-ever rainbow kite-flying event in April 2022 at a public park in Frisco. Over 100 people came out to fly their rainbow kites, ate pizzas, participated in arts and crafts, and met existing and new friends. People from all walks of life and all age groups traveled from all over the Dallas-Fort Worth area to attend this inclusive and affirming event. Events like this will be offered annually, if not more frequently.
  • Festivals: Pride Frisco made our debut appearance at the annual Frisco StrEATS Festival, which typically draws a crowd of 20,000+ people, in May 2022, to a very supportive community with a booth selling branded and unbranded pride merchandize and telling people about our first-ever, large-scale public pride festival in October 2022. Additionally, we partner with pride organizations in neighboring communities to support our sibling organizations and to extend Pride Frisco’s reach and impact. We will continue to show up to as many community-based events all over the Dallas-Fort Worth area to increase visibility and awareness for our organization and our advocacy.
  • Pride Frisco Inaugural Block Party: Pride Frisco hosted our inaugural block party on October 8, 2022, that was attended by 5,000 people who came from all over Texas in the course of four hours. Attendees enjoyed live music and entertainment, guest speakers, food trucks, games, arts and crafts, and connecting with many LGBTQ+ affirming and resource organizations. Over 50 vendors attended with a mix of supportive for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations that provide LGBTQIA+ professional resources, support, community, and local major sports teams: FC Dallas, Dallas Stars, Dallas Wings/WNBA, Panther City Lacrosse Club, and Pegasus Slowpitch Softball Association (PSSA).
  • Lasting Partnerships: Pride Frisco is grateful for the support of our community and business leaders. We are members of the Frisco Chamber of Commerce and the North Texas LGBT Chamber of Commerce. We are intentional in forming lasting partnerships with organizations that want to create safe, inclusive, and affirming spaces and opportunities for our LGBTQIA+ community members to go beyond survival and acceptance to thrive in a reality that celebrates diversity as a centering truth and an inherent strength. We work tirelessly with our partners to create new, affirming, systemic structures of affirmation and opportunity, especially for our LGBTQIA+ students, that takes the form of mentorship, career guidance, representational leadership, life skills development, personal finance education, and so much more. The possibilities are only limited by the imagination of our partners who boldly walk with us in authentic allyship.

Presence at these public events raise awareness that Pride Frisco exists to support our underserved LGBTQIA+ community, garners public support for our work in the community, and provides hope and positivity for members of our LGBTQIA+ community, especially our youth and families. Depending upon budget, we continue to host and partner with supportive organizations to create affirming, safe, and inclusive spaces for our LGBTQIA+ community to gather, both in person and online.

Ask the Expert Talks: We partner with trusted professionals who work in the LGBTQIA+ space to provide expert interactive community discussions. These individuals work in support of LGBTQIA+ equality, families, Title IX rights; primary, mental, and trans healthcare; and more. Providing competent, timely professional resources from reputable and trusted individuals and organizations is a vital way to empower our LGBTQIA+ community with actionable knowledge, especially parents of LGBTQIA+ children who often experience isolation and need quality information and resources to support and advocate for their children. In Texas and across the United States, sadly, we have seen over 100 anti-trans legislation with real and dire consequences for our trans and nonbinary families. Further, students need to know their rights and be empowered to self-organize and self-advocate for themselves and their peers. Allies need to understand how authentic allyship changes lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals in profound ways by advocating in their own spheres of existence and influence for community.

Pride Frisco Mark Rangel-Adams LGBTQIA+ Memorial Scholarship: In loving memory of the late Mark Rangel-Adams, who was a resident of Frisco and a member of our Pride Frisco family, this memorial scholarship will be awarded in May of every year to a graduating high school senior who reside in Frisco and is a member of the LGBTQIA+ or allied community, or whose pursuit of post-secondary education will benefit the LGBTQIA+ community. Each scholarship award is a minimum of $500. We aim to fund at least 2, $500 awards every May. We will provide more scholarships and in greater amounts with grant and donation monies received.

Community Center: Our goal is to establish a permanent home for Pride Frisco, a Community Center, in the heart of Frisco that provides vital resources and resource-coordination for the diverse needs of our LGBTQIA+ individuals and families of Frisco and the 10+ surrounding cities.

The Resource Center of Dallas, which supports and serves the LGBTQIA+ communities of North Texas, is the closest resource of its kind. It is 25 miles from Frisco, Texas, virtually inaccessible to busy working parents, guardians, and students in Frisco and the surrounding areas.

Ours will house an informed, supportive, and inclusive staff from our LGBTQIA+ community to provide onsite and online LGBTQIA+ programming, workshops, activities, and social events. Additionally, they will connect community needs with trusted local and national resources to render appropriate assistance and support. They will also curate and host ready-to-consume resources for all visitors to the Center.

Our Center will also partner with local businesses, such as LovePacs and others, to provide access to nutritious food, shelter assistance, and related services to LGBTQIA+ teens who have been kicked out of their homes or who are otherwise in various stages of homelessness. Grant and donation monies will be used to provide both ad-hoc disbursements and programmed events where food can be shared with our LGBTQIA+ community in a non-judgmental and affirming setting.

Every dollar helps us provide these and so many other services to our LGBTQIA+ community. We thank you in advance for your consideration and generosity.
