Somewhere between 6,751 and 15,021 migrant laborers died building Qatar’s Men's World Cup infrastructure.

Qatar doesn’t disaggregate its data, so it is impossible to pinpoint just where and how these men and women died.

NIVAS has been working for several years to help single mothers who lost their husbands to this work to rebuild and develop a stable foundation in the shadow of their missing husbands.

Prior to working with NIVAS, our partner Laddubati Mandal, made England’s Channel 4 news. Her story is worth a watch as it represents the situation of so many women in South Asian countries.

Many returned laborers have told us that on a regular basis they would go to sleep in their bunk room with their coworkers and wake up with one of them who had died in their sleep. Reported to their family that they died of natural causes. It is speculated that these young 20-something men were dying of heart attacks and kidney failure due to the working conditions. We know people who fell off high structures, due to the forced work and lack of safety measures. We know someone who was killed by a bulldozer. There are so many ways their lives ended and they did not return home.

FIFA reported a record-breaking $7.6 Billion in revenue from the Qatar World Cup, yet there is little to no compensation for these widows and children because their husbands died of so-called ‘natural causes’. Sometimes wives will receive the compensation they are due based on the insurance packages their husbands purchased when signing up for work abroad. Then the bills come. Bills from the contractor for supposed expenses incurred while abroad. Bills from the employment agency that sent him over. Soon the funds are gone.

So here we are. There’s not much that can be done now but to help these women and kids build a life worth living. And that’s what we are doing.

ONE EXAMPLE

Laddubati, mother of 7 shown above, lost her husband to the Qatar World Cup construction in 2021. Since then we have helped her and her kids gain legal landownership, build a 2-story flood and earthquake-resilient home, and launch a goat farming business to gain sustainable income into the future.
