Kayla was just five years old when she lost her mom. Childhood should be filled with birthdays, laughter and new experiencing—but for Kayla, her fifth birthday marked the beginning of a journey no child should have to take.

And while we wish stories like hers were rare, the truth is sobering: 1 in 14 children will lose a parent or sibling before they turn 18. Behind every statistic is a child trying to make sense of life after loss.

When Kayla came to Abba’s Child Grief Camp, she found something she didn’t know she needed—other children who understood. Her father later said, “Knowing that there are others who have experienced loss like Kayla—it’s been life changing.”

Since our start in 2004, we have walked alongside hundreds of children just like Kayla. We’ve watched them arrive carrying the weight of grief and leave carrying new friendships, coping tools and the knowledge that their story matters. Our camps create a safe space—filled with compassion, trained mentors and the gentle truth that healing is possible.
