Martha, age 79, has lived in her home for more than 45 years and truly believes that her home is where her heart is. But like many older adults in our region, she began struggling to keep up with costly repairs on a limited income. When her front entry porch deteriorated beyond safe use, her municipality was forced to condemn it—leaving her without a safe way to get in and out of her own home.

Martha was overwhelmed. She didn’t know how she could afford such a major repair, and her independence felt suddenly out of reach. Then, while working her part-time job at the local library, she saw a flyer for Rebuilding Together Hudson Valley’s Rebuilding Day program and decided to apply.

Once Martha was accepted, RTHV immediately got to work. Our first call was to one of our incredible partners, Consigli Construction. Without hesitation, they responded, “How can we help make this happen?” Together with the local building department, we secured permits, developed a rebuild plan, and moved quickly.

Within just one week, the unsafe enclosed porch was removed and replaced with a new, code-compliant deck and entryway—giving Martha the safe, accessible entrance she desperately needed and deserved.

After her repairs were complete, Martha, who loves to garden, shared this powerful reflection:

“I felt like a plant that had started to wilt. My roots grew weak and I was struggling to survive. After RTHV’s gracious and heartfelt help, I felt alive again—stretching toward the sun and thriving once more.”
