Located in Midcoast Maine, Independence Association is a nonprofit organization that supports adults and children with disabilities in achieving full and inclusive lives, through group homes, community living and employment programs, Certified Case Management programs, shared living, and our nationally recognized Spindleworks programs.

IA was founded in 1966 by five families who wanted more for their children than the institutional care that existed at the time. Today, with a full-time staff of over 140 people, IA continues to open new doors, push boundaries, create opportunities, support community inclusion and equal opportunity. Independence Association currently serves more than 350 individuals a year in 5 counties in Midcoast and Central Maine.

Spindleworks: Our nationally recognized Spindleworks program is an art-based effort for adults, providing our artists with studio and gallery space and allowing them to realize their creative dreams. Spindleworks was established in 1978 and supports over 60 member artists in both Brunswick and Gardiner. The facilities include a pottery studio, sculpture studios, weaving rooms, painting and drawing studios, a woodworking studio, as well as areas for sewing and textile arts. Our artwork has been featured both locally and at venues across the country, giving further opportunities for our artists to earn an income.

Need for Support and Funding: The majority of Independence Association’s funding comes from government sources, with philanthropic support filling in the gap between the level of funding that service payors offer and the quality of service that Independence Association is committed to provide. As the costs of providing support increases, we have seen a widening gap in the funding provided to us.
