I am walking in honor of my mother, Dianne Herbert, a 15-year breast cancer survivor. Being able to celebrate her 75th birthday this year was such a blessing.
Participating in such an impactful event was an easy yes. Those fighting cancer deserve support in ways large and small. This disease takes so much from so many. Unfortunately, I have lost several family members to cancer, but I consider it an honor to do my part to bring attention to the organizations that are doing the work to make these difficult times a bit easier.
My name is Shakara Banks. I was born in Albany but raised in Florence, South Carolina. I am an engineer with the NYS Department of Transportation. My hobbies include skiing, fishing, camping and spending time with my family. I am vice president of the Nubian Empire Ski Club, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, Nu Tau chapter. My wife, Clarisse, and I are the proud parents of two beautiful, intelligent, kind, creative and caring daughters, Nia and Cadence.
I am a huge Prince fan and visited Paisley Park with my family, a trip I will never forget.
Walking for Rock Your Style is my way of honoring my mother, remembering the family members I have lost and standing with every family still in the fight. Thank you for supporting my campaign and helping the NYOH Community Cancer Foundation continue doing this important work.
