Rebels for Rescue: A Healthier Future for Oxford’s Animals

Thanks to the incredible support from this community, we are thrilled to share that we’ve successfully fulfilled our first campaign goal: raising over $8,000 to install UVC technology at the Oxford Animal Resource Center. This upgrade will help control the spread of airborne and surface-level pathogens — meaning fewer sick animals, faster transports, and more pets finding their forever homes. This is a monumental first step, and it’s only the beginning.

Our inaugural Rebels For Rescue weekend proved the power of community-driven change. Now we’re ready to launch the next phase of the movement — a long-term, three-pronged effort to transform animal welfare across Mississippi.

What’s Next for Rebels For Rescue

1. Launch a Stray Spay & Neuter Program (500 dogs Minimum)

In partnership with Laws For Paws, we are developing Mississippi’s first large-scale stray spay/neuter initiative. Our goal is to spay or neuter at least 500 unowned animals, which will:

Save the local shelters more than $100,000 in intake and care costs
Dramatically reduce overcrowding and euthanasia risk
Prevent continuous cycles of stray litters
Fund a full-time program coordinator to keep this effort operating year-round

This is one of the most impactful steps we can take to reduce suffering and stabilize shelter populations.

**2. Expand Mars Petcare Better City For Pets™ Standards Across Mississippi**

Oxford is already recognized as a Better City For Pets™ community — a testament to its commitment to pet-friendly policies, public wellness, and humane animal care.

Our next step is to:

Highlight Oxford’s existing certification and educate residents on what it means
Showcase local progress and opportunities to strengthen these standards
Begin working with other Mississippi cities to help them pursue and earn the same certification

By uplifting Oxford’s model and expanding these standards statewide, we can create healthier, safer, more humane environments for pets and people across Mississippi.

3. Establish Humane & Responsible Breeding Standards

With guidance from reputable breeders who already uphold exceptional standards, we will develop a set of Humane & Responsible Breeding Practices for Mississippi. These standards will:

Highlight and support breeders doing things the right way
Provide clear public guidelines for what ethical breeding looks like
Reduce irresponsible practices that contribute to shelter overcrowding
Promote healthier pets and more informed families

This ensures that rescues, shelters, and ethical breeders are all part of one unified solution.
