Lollipop and Boomer arrived at Unity Farm Sanctuary in late summer 2020, originally purchased to be companions for an autistic granddaughter after the loss of her older horse to cancer. Boomer's health was precarious, especially after his castration, and concerns grew about Lollipop's well-being should he not survive, given their strong bond.
Boomer arrived appearing deformed, with an arched back, outward-pointing hooves, and hip issues. Both horses suffered from chronic diarrhea for nearly two years, attributed to ingesting stone dust on the sanctuary grounds despite wearing grazing muzzles.
Despite their challenges, Boomer has since thrived and become the tallest and sturdiest among the mini horses at the sanctuary, a testament to ongoing care and dedication.
Miniature horses, bred since the 1600s in Europe to replace children in coal mines, have a history of being favored by royalty and the wealthy. However, they often carry dwarfism genes, leading to significant health issues and requiring specialized veterinary care despite their small stature.
Support Lollipop, Boomer, and our mini horse rescues at Unity Farm Sanctuary as we continue to provide them with the care and love they deserve!
