My name is Robert DeMichiel. I am a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a retired police officer. For decades, I dedicated my life to serving my country and my community. Now, I’m reaching out for support as I battle daily pain and the lasting effects of injuries sustained in the line of duty.

🏥 The Challenge

In 1987, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed overseas. Not long after, I suffered tears in my left shoulder, leading to my first orthopedic surgery in 1989. Complications from that surgery caused further damage, resulting in an early medical retirement from the Marines in 1993. Despite further surgeries and physical therapy, nerve damage and pain persisted.

After moving to Phoenix, Arizona, I underwent yet another surgery to repair my shoulder. In 1999, I began a new chapter as a police officer in Arizona, eventually serving in the Motorcycle Traffic Unit for DUI and Drug Enforcement. In 2008, while on duty, my life changed again: I was struck by a vehicle while riding my police motorcycle. The accident resulted in:

Tears in the discs of my lower back (L4, L5, S1)
Injuries to both shoulders
Damage to my right knee, right wrist, and hand
Closed head brain trauma, causing ongoing memory loss and speech difficulties

After several surgeries and 13 months of recovery, I returned to desk duty but was ultimately forced into retirement due to my injuries. Since then, I have struggled to return to the workforce, but my injuries severely limit my ability to stand, lift, or perform many tasks. The pain is constant, 24/7, a daily reminder of the sacrifices made in service.

🌟 Discovering Hope

Despite years of surgeries, therapy, and trying to adapt, the pain and limitations remain. I avoid almost all physical activities: biking, hiking, yard work, long walks, and even extended travel are out of reach. Each day is a struggle, but I keep moving forward, hoping for a breakthrough.

Stem cell treatment represents the light at the end of the tunnel. My greatest hope is to relieve my daily pain, regain mobility, and reclaim the ability to enjoy physical activities, sports, and quality sleep, things that most people take for granted.

Serving in the Marines and as a police officer was an honor, but it came at a high cost. The injuries I carry have drastically changed my life. I want nothing more than to be able to participate in life again, enjoying activities, spending time with loved ones, and living without the constant reminder of pain and loss.
