The Twin Lakes Skatepark Project is embarking on an exciting journey to bring a high-quality skatepark to Grayson County, KY. Our first goal is to raise $75,000 for Phase 1: Design.

Why $75,000?

Skatepark design is a detailed process with several critical stages, each producing important documents:

1. Concept Design: This stage provides a flexible depiction of the skatepark’s appearance. It’s ideal when the location isn’t fixed or changes in size and scope are likely.

2. Final Design: This represents the approved appearance of the skatepark and is used to create construction documents.

3. Construction Documents: Known as CDs, these blueprints and instructions detail everything from rebar types to concrete smoothness. They ensure the skatepark is built to the highest standards.

Design Considerations

Skatepark design focuses on two main areas: usability and functionality.

- Usability: Flow, traffic, speed, difficulty, visibility within the skating area, and stylistic discipline.
- Functionality: Capacity, seating/resting areas, access, visibility in and around the park, safety, drainage, aesthetic appeal, landscaping, spatial and budgetary constraints, security, and maintenance.

Balancing these considerations is key to a successful skatepark. While no skatepark is perfect, the best ones offer the most appeal with the fewest flaws. A well-designed skatepark combines interesting and challenging elements, making it more popular than larger but poorly designed ones.

Quality Over Size

Quality design is more important than size. A smaller, well-designed skatepark can be more engaging and beloved by the community than a larger, uninspired one. Beware of companies offering prefabricated solutions; these often fall short of meeting the community’s needs. Professional design ensures the skatepark’s long-term success and sustainability.

Community Involvement

While community input is essential, the design should be left to professionals with experience and sensitivity to how people skate. Amateur designs can lead to inadequate facilities that fail to attract skaters. A professionally designed skatepark will serve the community better and longer.
