"Food desert" is the phrase most people reach for. It has never told the whole truth. It makes these conditions sound like weather, like something that simply happened to us. Our community knows better.

What we live with is food apartheid. It is generations of systems and policies that decided which neighborhoods get grocery stores and which ones get left. Black and low-income communities have been on the losing end of that decision every single time.

At Rustic Roots Sanctuary, we believe in food sovereignty: the right of people to grow, access, and define their own food systems. Healthy, culturally meaningful food is not a luxury. It is a right.

We stopped waiting

When the Shop 'n Save closed in 2018, Spanish Lake lost one of its last full-service grocery stores. That left one store to feed 18,000 people.

We could have waited for another chain to decide we were worth it. Eight years later, no one has come. We are glad we never counted on it.

We planted seeds instead. Literally.

Spanish Lake has soil that will grow almost anything you put into it. Since day one we have believed that everyone here should have access to the abundance this land can offer.

In a few short years, Rustic Roots Sanctuary has grown and distributed over 68,000 pounds of food. We share it through the Spanish Lake Farmers Market, our giveaways, and our senior and young families programs.

This is not charity. This is community feeding community.

Then something we didn't plan for

Our farm became a place of healing.

People tell us they came for the food and stayed because the space makes them feel calm, grounded, and connected. So we made room for that. We host celebrations, workshops, field trips, farmer training, and holistic healing gatherings.

When we heal our relationship with the land, we begin to heal ourselves.

What Spanish Lake needs next

The longer we do this work, the clearer the answer gets. Our community needs food infrastructure it owns. Real systems that do not disappear with the next grant cycle or the next store closure.

So we are building two of them.

Fresh Picked Farm Stop
A community grocery store that brings fresh, local food back into the neighborhood. No more long drives for produce. No more empty shelves. Healthy food, grown by people you know.

North County Harvest Hub
A shared-use cold storage, aggregation, and processing facility that will support local farmers, create jobs, cut food waste, and finally build the food distribution system Spanish Lake has always deserved.

These are not just buildings. They are the foundation of a different kind of food system, rooted in justice, sustainability, and community power.

This is big work, and we are not doing it alone

Our goal is to raise $50,000 to keep every part of it moving.

Your gift grows food. It runs our farmers market. It feeds seniors and young families. It trains new farmers. It keeps our healing programs open. And it carries the Farm Stop and the Harvest Hub closer to opening their doors.

Every dollar strengthens the local food system we are building together.

Food equity is a big goal. With this community behind us, it is within reach.

Thank you for standing with Rustic Roots Sanctuary. Thank you for standing with the land, the people, and the future we are growing right here in Spanish Lake.
