Project Neighbors has been selected for the 2026 World Relief Campaign, organized annually by the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT), of Valparaiso University. Project Neighbors was officially founded in 1989 and builds and manages affordable rental housing in support of underserved families in the Valparaiso area.

Our campaign entitled “Powering Homes, Empowering People” is working to raise money for Project Neighbors and their new residential development The Crossing. This project will be a 23-unit studio apartment building at 850 Axe Ave, designed to provide stable, affordable housing for neighbors who are currently struggling with housing insecurity. This project will create safe, efficient, and dignified homes for individuals who might otherwise face unstable or unsafe living situations, and it represents one of the most significant expansions of affordable housing in our organization’s history.

Project Neighbors is a community of Valparaiso residents and Valparaiso University alumni who come from many different backgrounds. The program helped break the racial housing barrier back in 1969 and has not stopped working to support the black community of Valparaiso since. It is their deepest desire to provide affordable housing and support to all underserved families and people around Valpo. All donations will go toward covering the purchase of over 15,000ft of electrical wire for The Crossing which is set to be completed this May.

What is Salt??

The Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) is the social justice ministry of the division of Calling and Spiritual Life at Valparaiso University. As a community, students seek to embody the Christian call to be the “salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13). SALTers are equipped to lead lives of social justice and serve as agents for positive change in their communities. The fall semester generally focuses on addressing local issues of social justice through local action, education, and awareness, whereas the spring semester addresses issues of social justice on a national or international scale through the World Relief Campaign.
