Scratching at the Moon Exhibition Walkthrough with artist Young Chung, Co-curator and artist Anna Sew Hoy, ICA LA Director and co-curator Anne Ellegood

GYOPO is excited to co-present with the ICA LA, a walkthrough of the exhibit, Scratching at the Moon, on view at the museum until July 28th.

Please join us for an intimate exhibition walkthrough which will include an overview of the exhibition with co-curators Anna Sew Hoy and ICA LA’s Good Works Executive Director, Anne Ellegood, followed by a conversation with Young Chung about their work and participation in the exhibition. While Young Chung may best be known as the founder of Commonwealth and Council gallery, Chung studied art at the University of California, Irvine, with professors such as the late, great artist Yong Soon Min (Co-founder of GYOPO) whose works are also included in Scratching at the Moon.

Young Chung (they/them)
Young Chung (we/us/ours) is a Space Operator at Commonwealth and Council, a gallery in Koreatown, Los Angeles founded in 2010. Our program is rooted in our commitment to explore how a community of artists can sustain our co-existence through generosity and hospitality. Commonwealth and Council celebrates our manifold identities and experiences through the shared dialogue of art—championing practices by women, queer, POC, and our ally artists to build counter-histories that reflect our individual and collective realities. Chung received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1998 and BA from University of California, Irvine in 1996.

Anna Sew Hoy (she/her)
Anna Sew Hoy was born in Auckland, New Zealand and lives in Los Angeles. She utilizes sculpture, ceramics, public art and performance to connect with our environment, and to demonstrate the power found in the fleeting and handmade. Her work has been at the forefront of a re-engagement with clay in contemporary art, and is identified with a critical rethinking of the relationship between art and craft. Sew Hoy’s work is in the collections of the Hammer Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego. Solo presentations of her work have been mounted at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Aspen Art Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Hammer Museum; the San Jose Museum of Art; and the Orange County Museum of Art. Sew Hoy received a Guggenheim Fellowship for Visual Art in 2022. She was awarded a Creative Capital Grant for Visual Art to support Psychic Body Grotto, her largest public sculpture to date. She has also received the California Community Foundation Grant for Emerging Artists, the United States Artists Broad Fellowship, and the Anonymous Was A Woman Award. She is Associate Professor and Ceramics Area Head at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Anne Ellegood (she/her)
Anne Ellegood is the Executive Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). She was the Senior Curator at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles from 2009-2019. Prior to joining the Hammer, she was Curator of Contemporary Art at the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., and from 1998-2003 she was the Associate Curator at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. At the Hammer, she co-curated, with Erin Christovale, Made in LA 2018, a biennal of LA-based artists. Other group exhibitions include Take It or Leave It: Institution, Image, Ideology (2014); All of this and nothing (2011); and The Uncertainty of Objects and Ideas: Recent Sculpture (2006). She has organized solo exhibitions of the work of Eric Baudelaire, Kevin Beasley, Shannon Ebner, Latifa Echakhch, Charles Gaines, My Barbarian, John Outterbridge, Pedro Reyes, Tschabalala Self, Francis Upritchard, Sara VanDerBeek, Lily van der Stokker and many others. Ellegood recently organized the first North American retrospective of the work of Jimmie Durham, which opened at the Hammer in February 2017 and traveled to the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Remai Modern.
