Women, especially women of color, remain significantly underrepresented in lucrative STEM careers. Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) is working to change this by reaching girls at the beginning of the STEM pipeline. Our programs serve TK-6th grade students, with a particular focus on girls of color from low-income families and communities.

Our Mission

To remove systemic barriers to all girls’ participation in STEM throughout elementary education, engage them through hands-on learning, increase their positive attitudes toward STEM, and equip them with 21st century skills.

Our Vision

SAfG envisions a gender-equitable society where systemic barriers no longer limit women’s choices, enabling them to pursue careers that bring economic freedom and opportunities to advance society.

Why SAfG?

When Tiffany Sprague and Courtenay Carr-Heuer, two moms of curious young daughters, discovered that elementary school students in California receive an average of only 20 minutes of science instruction per week, they knew something had to change. Seeing that most afterschool science programs were either inaccessible or uninspiring, and learning that girls often begin losing interest in STEM as early as elementary school, they decided to take action. Together, they founded Scientific Adventures for Girls (SAfG) to spark curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of science in every girl.

What began as a pilot program in one East Bay school is now an afterschool program for nearly 950+ TK-6th grade girls in 24 schools during the 2025-2026 academic year! This year, our 27 weeks of classes, taught across Richmond and Oakland schools, are giving girls access to Biomimicry, Simple Machines, and Chemistry of Slime curriculum. Access they wouldn’t otherwise have.

SAfG is dedicated to empowering girls to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators. Through afterschool and library programs, spring break and summer camps, and family STEAM events, we capture their interest early and help young girls develop positive STEM attitudes and identities. These hands-on experiences spark curiosity, build confidence, and inspire girls to envision themselves as future STEM leaders. We are Changing the Face of Science—one girl at a time.
