To all those who have been here before and to those who are new- thank you so much for taking a moment to check out our fundraiser for one of my favorite places on earth.
I'm writing this message post our 2024 election day and although I need time to process the decision our country has made for its future, I am feeling empowered to continue to reiterate the importance of mutual aid during this time of instability.
The Tool Library is not just a maker space or a place where people come to accomplish their DIY projects. It is a place that gives structure to Baltimore's sharing economy and is a light in a darkening landscape of late-stage capitalism. The Tool Library rejects the idea that every individual needs to own their own tools for success, whether that is a power tool to build a new deck or the means to access the resources to uplift someone's situation. Instead, the Tool Library believes in the power that radiates from a connected community who are willing to share knowledge, space, and resources with one another. We are truly a mutual aid project!
A "sharing economy" is not a new idea by any means but it feels like one that has been buried under capitalist individualism and reduced to small acts of casual sharing in the private sphere. To me, bringing a structured sharing economy back into the public sphere is the answer to a brighter future where everyone is accounted for.
The Station North Tool Library is a budding piece in this movement and that is why I love it so much. I feel connected to the people who spend their time here whether that is as a tool borrower, class taker, volunteer, or teacher. I am honored to be a part of the work being done here and excited for what is to come.
I hope that those visiting this page can understand the momentum behind a project like this one (on a global scale even!) and decide that they want in!
