October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year, we’re calling on all Sisters on the Fly to unite and raise money for Casting for Recovery (CfR). Let's show our support for our breast cancer survivor/thriver sisters and the incredible network of CfR that supports over 800 women a year through healing fly fishing wellness retreats.

Sisters on the Fly has proudly supported CfR since 2010. As a community of women who embrace "women supporting women" and "empowerment through exceptional outdoor adventures," we know the power of sisterhood. Many of our Sisters have been directly impacted by breast cancer and have attended CfR retreats. Our missions align perfectly: together, we can make a difference.

Our Goal

This month we will support CfR's mission and help fund the retreats that provide so much healing and support to women affected by breast cancer.

About Casting for Recovery

Since 1996, Casting for Recovery (CfR) has provided FREE wellness fly fishing retreats for women in any stage of breast cancer treatment and recovery. To date, over 800 women a year nationwide, and to date has hosted retreats for over 12,000 women!

Each year, CfR introduces over 800 women to the therapeutic sport of fly fishing at one of their many retreats (60 in 2024) held across the country. One of the end goals is clear—to learn to cast a fly rod and, if lucky, to land a fish! Equally if not more important is CfR’s objective to hold retreats that bring together women who have walked similar paths with cancer, and to provide oncology wellness support from compassionate medical and psychosocial professionals who are always accessible at each retreat.

Between 65 and 75 percent of the women who attend a CfR retreat have never been to a breast cancer support group. The unique CfR program appeals to many members of the breast cancer community who are not drawn to traditional resources but who are in need of support.

Over the course of each retreat, many common themes emerge; but as each woman’s breast cancer journey is unique, so is her experience at the retreat. CfR hopes that each woman finds what she needs to flourish and move positively forward in her life!
