About Breaking Code Silence
Breaking Code Silence (BCS) incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the state of California in 2021. It is the most recent incarnation of a decades-long movement against institutional child abuse. BCS represents children, youth, and adults who are/were incarcerated in the U.S. "troubled teen industry" (TTI), a network of privately-owned, powerfully punitive, and often wilderness-based therapy programs, residential treatment centers, therapeutic boarding schools, group homes, boot camps, and faith-based academies. Breaking Code Silence’s constituency is quite large - with an estimated 50,000+ youth being placed in congregate care facilities in the troubled teen industry annually, and thus, hundreds of thousands or potentially millions of survivors in the United States (and beyond).
As an organization, Breaking Code Silence has two primary goals: 1) eradicating institutional child abuse, and 2) empowering TTI survivors - to heal themselves and promote positive social change through positive self-advocacy. BCS utilizes education, outreach, research, and community organizing to protect the civil and human rights of youth.
Over the last year, BCS has become a leader in policy, advocacy, and research. Breaking Code Silence seeks to become an established voice and source of expertise in discussions pertaining to juvenile justice reform, mental health, and children’s rights, and we are committed to spearheading efforts to pass federal legislation that: 1) defines and 2) prohibits/criminalizes child abuse in congregate care.
End Institutional Child Abuse
