Arts and Culture

Arts and culture education empowers students to be healthy global learners through instruction in theatre, art, dance, and music. In Sioux City Community Schools, the District’s fine arts curriculum deepens students’ appreciation for the world around them.

At schools such as Hunt A+ Arts Elementary School, arts and culture is infused into the daily curriculum for students in kindergarten through fifth grade. The emphasis on arts and culture boosts students’ critical thinking skills. Studies have shown exposure to arts and culture promotes increased empathy and tolerance in students of all ages.

In middle and high school, arts and culture curriculum is an important part of classroom instruction and extracurricular activities. From art and theatre to band and show choir, Sioux City Community Schools maintains a strong focus on fine arts.

Career and Technical Education

Career and Technical Education (CTE) offers students practical skills and knowledge to prepare them for success in the workforce and beyond. Through hands-on learning experiences, CTE programs like the Sioux City Career Academy equip students with the technical expertise, critical thinking abilities, and employability skills to thrive in a variety of career pathways.

The Sioux City Career Academy offers over 30 pathways for students to explore. By enrolling in the career academy, students benefit from both high school and college credits, at no cost to students or parents. Students from 10 schools in the tri-state area, including Iowa, South Dakota, and Nebraska, take advantage of courses at the career academy.

Preparing students for career and secondary education options

Sioux City Public Schools Foundation supports CTE through hands on equipment to enhance the student learning experience. The Foundation also provides professional development opportunities to engage teachers with the latest industry trends.

Gifts to the Foundation will further CTE in Sioux City and ensure students can obtain valuable skills to enter, compete, and advance in their education and career in the global workforce.

Annually, over 150 Sioux City Career Academy students participate in a work-based internship, adding valuable real-world experience to their resumes.

The Sioux City Public Schools Foundation supports career and technical education through the Sioux City Career Academy by providing professional development opportunities for teachers and through hands on learning experiences for students.

STEM Education

The science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) industry is one of the fastest growing fields in the world. Students with STEM experience are highly sought after because their work is high impact, focusing on innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

The Sioux City Community School District is uniquely positioned to create leaders in the field of STEM. Three of the District’s elementary schools focus specifically on elements of STEM.

Morningside STEM Elementary School focuses on all aspects of STEM as part of its core curriculum.
Loess Hills Computer Programming Elementary School incorporates technology, engineering, and math into lessons on coding.
Spalding Park Environmental Sciences Elementary School gives students the opportunity to explore natural sciences into its daily environment.

Additionally, the Sioux City Career Academy allows students to a variety of STEM fields through its Career and Technical Education pathways.

Students in career and technical education programs have a 13% higher graduation rate than students who do not have access to CTE opportunities.

$75,000 for accessible and engaging sensory playground equipment at Leeds Elementary School
$100,000 toward the District’s trades building and CTE for Sioux City Career Academy students
