The numbers tell the story:

Nearly 1 in 3 families headed by single women in Georgia live below the poverty line.
In metro Atlanta, 71% of families living below the poverty line are headed by single moms, and 26.7% of children live in poverty.
For children born into low-income families, Atlanta ranks last among major U.S. metros for upward mobility.
Nationally, 40% of U.S. households are “liquid-asset poor,” meaning they don’t have enough savings to survive a single missed paycheck.
As well 37% of Americans couldn’t cover a $400 emergency without borrowing or going into debt.

Too often, statistics like these are met with judgment toward mothers —

“She should’ve done more.” OR “She shouldn’t have gotten pregnant in that situation.”

The truth is that instability is often unpredictable, and freedom can often feel unattainable for young single moms. Most Americans are just one paycheck, one medical bill, or one unexpected crisis away from poverty.

Instability isn’t always the result of bad decisions. Far too often, it stems from societal and systemic conditions and unpredictable circumstances that affect mothers from all backgrounds.

At TMC, housing has been our foundation from the beginning — but it’s actually only a piece of what we do. We offer both:

Our community is a safe space to experience dignity, understanding, healing and connection with other moms where they can breathe, cry, laugh, learn and grow without judgment.

True safety for a mom is more than just a locked door at night — it’s the freedom to live, rest, and grow without fear or isolation and with connection to a thriving support network. The Mom Community house is a place to live AND a space for life-on-life connection. It’s where the slow deep work happens and lives are transformed, truly making the house A Safe Space for Moms.

At The Mom Community, being a safe space looks like:

Housing & Home: Our 2 year independent living program & vital life skills training provide a safe and secure environment for learning to build a home.
Comprehensive Parenting Support: We empower our moms with resources for birth, postpartum, & parenting education & guidance to nurture their child(ren).
Personal Growth: We ensure our moms have access to trauma-informed and supportive spaces of care, counseling, and connection for their physical, mental & spiritual health.
Career Development: We cultivate opportunities to build skills, pursue education, and prepare for career growth while also reducing barriers to sustainable employment for a single mom thus laying the foundation for long-term economic stability and independence.
Community of Support: We help build a welcoming circle of supportive connections & relationships where moms can seek help, gather, unwind, and share openly knowing they will be heard and seen.

A Safe Space for Moms is a space where a mom can shed her armor, receive encouragement, and envision a future for her family that’s not defined by mere survival. When moms have a safe space, they can heal, build stability, and provide the kind of nurturing environment their children need to thrive. This year we have welcomed 2 new moms and their babies into our Residential Program. We also expanded our Mommy Mentorship Program to empower more moms and held a series called Thriving by Design with Kala Baxter. Through our Baby Supply Closet we have given out essential supplies to dozens of moms and several community events to share resources.
