The Caribbean region is blessed with an abundance of wildlife. In fact, it is considered a “hotspot” - one of the top 5 areas of the planet for biodiversity! This includes 176 endemic species of birds—iconic and special birds like the Cuban Tody, Whistling Warbler, Ridgway’s Hawk, Puerto Rican Parrot, Red-billed Streamertail, Black-capped Petrel, Grenada Dove, and many more residents and migrants, many of them threatened with extinction.

BirdsCaribbean has been working for 34 years to build capacity for research, education, and on-the-ground conservation projects to save birds and their habitats. We know that investing in people, working with communities, and training the next generation of conservation professionals is key to long-term success. Thanks to you, 2022 was a banner year with many great accomplishments!

We successfully completed ten training workshops this past year, providing skills, resources, and mentoring to 175+ Caribbean wildlife professionals from 21+ islands. These are the people that are working on-the-ground every day to raise local awareness and save the Caribbean’s incredible birds and nature from serious threats, such as climate change, development, invasive species, illegal trapping, and pollution.

We also provided materials and small grants to our dedicated partners to carry out local projects to monitor and conserve landbirds and waterbirds as well as educate about the beauty and value of wild birds and the importance of natural areas like wetlands and forests.

In 2022, we launched our Caribbean Bird Banding Network, holding our first training workshops in the Bahamas and Cuba and certifying our first 3 Caribbean banders! Our exciting new Caribbean Motus Collaboration program also made great strides with 3 new stations installed in Puerto Rico and Barbados (and many more in the pipeline!).

Abundant thanks to our partners, members, and donors that made all this work, and much more, possible. We are already seeing many positive impacts of our programs—conservation initiatives to save Caribbean birds, led by our partners, are growing by leaps and bounds.
