SINGING as Power in Resistance

A 2-Part Class: Sundays, July 19 AND 26, 2026, 5:30 - 7 p.m.

The first session will focus on a few of the psychological, physiological, and community benefits of singing. It will include video clips from documentaries that demonstrate the power of song as a form of protest and resistance for transforming society. These excerpts will be taken from the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, the South African Anti-Apartheid Movement, and the Estonian Independence, also known as the Singing Revolution.

The second session will begin with a breathing exercise, followed by singing or listening to a few resistance songs together. Attendees will then be guided to compose their own individual or small-group Resistance songs—short, 1-3-phrase songs.

Absolutely no previous experience, music education, or special skills are needed to participate. Come find your voice, learn, and build community.

We will learn from Andrea Frisch-Hara, a Board-Certified Music Therapist, NYS Licensed Creative Arts Therapist, and Psychotherapist, who has been supporting health, growth, and joy with a broad range of people for 35+ years. She holds an MA in Music Therapy from NYU where she was an adjunct professor. Andrea has authored music therapy articles, book chapters and presented at professional conferences. She directed the 9.11 NYC Music Therapy Relief Project. She believes in the power of breath and song and uses singing as a tool for change. She draws inspiration from her work and the music in nature. Andrea is a leader of The Beacon for Democracy's Shine the Light group in Stamford, NY.
