Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive planthopper first detected in the United States in Pennsylvania in 2014. Since then, it has spread throughout much of the northeastern United States and feeds on more than 100 plant species. While Spotted Lanternfly does not typically kill most plants directly, large infestations can stress plants and contribute to their decline.

During this walk-and-talk program, we’ll explore Spotted Lanternfly identification, lifecycle, behavior, and spread while learning how to survey for the insect during different seasons of the year. We’ll also discuss management options available to private landowners and demonstrate how to make your own Spotted Lanternfly funnel trap using accessible materials you may already have at home.

You’ll leave with practical knowledge and tools you can use to help spot and slow the spread of this invasive pest.

The program will take place on generally even, open terrain, though muddy conditions are possible. Participants should come prepared with water, snacks, sturdy hiking shoes or boots, and weather-appropriate clothing, including warm or rain layers as needed. Binoculars are optional.
