According to the Ocean Conservancy, over 11 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans every year, breaking down into harmful microplastics that infiltrate every level of the food chain—and have even been found in human brains.

The economic toll is staggering: Plastics damage essential marine ecosystem services, resulting in over $2.5 trillion in losses annually.

Recent studies reveal alarming findings: plastics are being discovered in our hearts and brains, complicating post-surgical recovery and leading to early mortality. One major source of this plastic exposure is from consuming plastic-contaminated seafood.

Introducing the Poseidon Plastic Tracking System

We've launched a new global initiative to map plastic contamination in oceans and waterways as well as identifying the most at-risk populations due to this exposure—both now and in the future. The Poseidon Plastic Tracking System orchestrates diverse data and technology including geospatial visualization, AI/ML analytics, satellite imagery, and advanced simulations to forecast the impacts of plastic contamination and guide interventions that protect both the environment and public health.

**The Poseidon Plastic Tracking System will:**

Identify the location and accumulation of plastics in oceans and waterways.
Track the movement of plastics from source to ecosystem harm.
Understand the current and future impact of plastic contamination on human and environmental health.

Tracking this accumulation over time is key to developing policies and implementing measures that address both the short- and long-term impacts of plastic contamination on our planet and all living creatures.

With pilot funding from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), we’ve demonstrated Poseidon in the Foxe Basin of the Canadian Arctic, where indigenous communities are especially at risk due to their reliance on marine life as a food source.
