Since we were founded in 2020, over 3,000 women trauma survivors have participated in &Rise peer support groups, and we’ve served another 625 women through special events. Our goal is to raise $20,000 to further our programming by December 31, 2023, and your donation will help us make that possible!

About &Rise

Jennifer Ramirez founded &Rise in 2019 after leaving an abusive relationship. When she started holding women’s empowerment groups in her living room, she didn’t anticipate the overwhelming response she would get. When she maxed out her free Eventbrite account, she knew she was onto something.

Counseling is in fact the greatest need for victims of domestic violence in Illinois, according to the 2016 ICJIA Illinois victim needs assessment, and they’re most likely to seek help from informal sources.

&Rise programming creates safe spaces for women trauma survivors to be seen, be heard, and heal in their own Chicago communities. We hold several weekly peer support groups, and we host special events like empowerment activities and learning sessions on healthy relationships, healthy coping skills, financial literacy, career development, all-around wellness, and more.

Last year, our donors helped us double the size of our counseling program and add three new support groups to provide more specialized services to Spanish-speaking women, women with medical trauma or chronic illness, and one for emotional abuse survivors. In 2024, we’ll be hiring our first employees! It’s an exciting time for us, and with more funding, we’ll be able to keep growing and serving more women.

Women with other marginalized identities suffer from disproportionate negative outcomes of traumatic experiences. &Rise believes in diversity, equity, and inclusion, and we also serve a diverse population with many backgrounds and ethnicities represented. Our board reflects that diversity, contributing to community development and equitable access to programs and services for women.

Rising awareness about the causes and effects of trauma hasn’t curbed the problem of domestic violence. Between 2020 and 2021, the Illinois Domestic Violence Hotline reported a 9 percent uptick in contacts, and based on CDC data, we can assume that 47.3 percent of those callers were women. Increasing levels of trauma from domestic violence will result in more financial hardships and physical illness for women in addition to increased mental and emotional impact.
