At Communities In Schools of Los Angeles (CISLA), our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. CISLA was founded in 2007 as an independent affiliate of Communities In Schools (CIS), the nation's leading dropout prevention organization proven to keep students in school and on the path to graduation. Serving the city of Los Angeles, home to California's largest public school system in terms of the number of students and the second-largest public school district in the United States, our work has impacted the lives of more than 13,000 students each year. CISLA serves five communities, including Boyle Heights, South LA, Westlake/Pico-Union, Watts, and part of West LA, all of which have been affected by historical red-lining practices resulting in housing and health access disparities and food inequality. These lingering effects are particularly evident within the schools we serve. We connect students to caring adults and community resources that help them overcome barriers hindering their success. Together, we build a powerful change movement of peers, students, and alumni committed to building an equitable path to education for future generations.
