Founded in 2002 and officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2004, Smith County Humane has been a vital resource for animals and pet owners across Smith County. In a region with no active county animal control or public shelter, our all-volunteer team fills a critical gap in animal welfare services.

Since our inception, we’ve helped spay or neuter over 7,000 animals, reducing overpopulation and improving the lives of countless pets and their owners.

What We Do

Rescue & Adoption
We take in stray, abandoned, and surrendered cats and dogs, placing them into loving homes or transferring them to trusted rescue partners.

Community Cat Care
Our dedicated team humanely traps, spays/neuters, vaccinates, and returns community (feral) cats, helping control the free-roaming cat population.

Spay/Neuter & Pet Food Assistance
We offer financial assistance to help community members spay/neuter their pets and provide pet food support to struggling families.

Frank’s Emergency Medical Fund
Launched recently, this fund assists pet owners facing unexpected veterinary emergencies—helping them avoid the heartbreaking decision of euthanasia due to financial hardship.

Intake Diversion Programs
We are actively developing programs aimed at keeping pets with their families—preventing unnecessary shelter surrenders and supporting long-term pet ownership.

At Smith County Humane, we believe all animals deserve compassion and humane treatment. Our mission continues to grow as we expand services to meet the evolving needs of Smith County’s animals and the people who care for them.
