Story

Mira Foundation USA is the only organization dedicated to providing guide dogs to blind American children. Since 2010, Mira USA has provided these extraordinarily talented services dogs to children at no charge. We are grateful to the Skladany Family for selecting us as a way to honor the memory of their loved ones.

Theresa M. Skladany

Theresa Skladany, a woman of courage, integrity, and candor was filled with a love of life and a courageous spirit. A model, artist, and vocalist who believed in the value of an honest day’s work and the quality of a person’s word.

After raising three successful children, Theresa returned to the workplace where she coordinated patient services in various specialty medical clinics. Following retirement, at the age of 85, she continued a very active lifestyle from her home base in Winter Park, FL. Theresa enjoyed traveling, drawing, painting, walking, and training her service dog, Hummer. Theresa and Hummer enriched each other along with everyone they met. They were adventurers together. They encouraged whomever they met with a “can do” attitude, no matter what the circumstances.

In retirement, Theresa spent summers at her daughter’s ranch in Reno, Nevada and enjoyed the beauty of the high desert climate and the Sierra Nevada mountains.

Part of Theresa’s legacy is endorsing the work and values of those who protect the vulnerable, such as Mira USA.

Leah A. Skladany, Ph.D.

Leah A. Skladany, Ph.D., was a speech Pathologist in Reno, NV. She was a professor of speech pathology at the University of Nevada where she lectured and mentored students in the clinical program. She earned many awards for her commitment to teaching and assisting students in developing quality speech pathology skills.

Leah’s passion was working with our country’s veterans in her private clinic “Voice Solutions” and at the Reno Veterans Hospital. She was known for her no-nonsense attitude, her directness, her dedication to her patients, her truthfulness, and her genuine sincerity. Leah owned a ranch in Reno where she raised four German Shepherds. She preferred the companionship of her “girls” and patiently taught each of them to confidently protect their home while living a rewarding, relaxed, social life with friends and family. Leah’s girls were her family and the centerpiece of her life.

Part of Leah’s legacy is to support those who protect and enrich the lives of others, such as Mira USA.
