Desi Rainbow offers educational programs for parents and family members to learn about important issues affecting LGBTQ+ children and adults. We're proud to offer a 90 minute seminar on April 21, presented by Dr. Dennis Flores, PHD, RN, a leading expert whose research focuses on the early provision of health information attuned to the emergent attractions, behavior, and identities of LGBTQ+ adolescents to reduce risks for HIV/STI infection and negative mental health.
The webinar will address:

The protective effects of parent-child sexual health communication
Family communication challenges across the LGBTQ+ spectrum
LGBTQ+ identity milestones
Transgender-specific considerations for inclusive family discussions
Missed opportunities for inclusive Sex Ed at home
Breaking from gendered roles and scripts
Parental role as a sexual health educator in the current political context
Looping in healthcare: the Triadic Model of Care (youth-parent-providers)

Dr. Flores is the Class of 1942 Endowed Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Nursing and an affiliated faculty at the Program in Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies. Through inclusive parent-child communication interventions, his research focuses on the early provision of health information attuned to the emergent attractions, behavior, and identities of LGBTQ+ adolescents to reduce risks for HIV/STI infection and negative mental health. Dr. Flores’ adolescent health promotion work has included urban and rural community education with LGBTQ+ young people and their parents, being a spokesperson for HIV/STI testing campaigns with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and workforce development with more than 3,000 nurses across the globe.

This program is free for Desi Rainbow members. Members provide sustaining support for Desi Rainbow with a monthly contribution of $5 or more, or an annual contribution of $60 or more.
