UIUCares is the humanitarian arm of Umu Igbo Unite. We work across Southeastern Nigeria to expand access to education, healthcare, vocational training, and community development. From scholarships for brilliant students to sanitation facilities in public schools, UIUCares is committed to building opportunity where it is needed most. Our 2026 goal is to raise $150,000 to expand programs that transform lives across Igbo communities. Our Work in Action

Education & Scholarships

UIUCares currently supports 40 secondary school students across 11 schools in Anambra and Enugu. Scholarship recipients receive:

School fees
Books and uniforms
Learning materials
Term stipends

Award $1,000 scholarships to ten Igbo students in the U.S. and support forty students in Anambra and Enugu with school fees, supplies, and stipends. These students represent the next generation of leaders in their communities.

Technology Training

Our technology lab in Enugu provides six month computer training programs. Students learn:

Email communication

Utilize the technology lab in the UIUCares Enugu office, to train teachers for smart-school implementation and continue our secondary school student technology cohorts with 20 students per session. Graduates leave with essential digital skills for the modern workforce.

Girls Health Initiative

Menstrual health challenges prevent many girls from attending school. UIUCares provides:

school based workshops

Provide access to sanitary products and health education for girls. More than 520 girls have already benefited from this program.

Apprenticeship Program

Inspired by the Igbo tradition of Igba-Boi, this program trains young adults in vocational trades including:

Solar installation
Tailoring
Electrical work
Furniture making
Computer repair

Graduates gain real world skills and launch sustainable businesses.

Restoration Series

Many public schools in Nigeria face severe infrastructure challenges. UIUCares restores:

classrooms
sanitation facilities
roofs and ceilings
school laboratories

We aim to construct two additional sanitation facilities, renovate ten classrooms, and establish a dedicated maintenance team.These improvements provide safer learning environments for thousands of students.

Relief Programs

About UIUCares

UIUCares was established in 2014 as the humanitarian arm of Umu Igbo Unite. Umu Igbo Unite is a 501(c)(3)nonprofit organization dedicated to cultural preservation, professional development, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement among the Igbo diaspora. Today the organization has 14 chapters across North America and Canada and operates a dedicated UIUCares office in Enugu State, Nigeria, where local staff manage projects and community programs. Our work focuses on four key impact areas:

Education: Supporting students through scholarships, technology training, school materials, stipends, and the renovation of classrooms, laboratories, and libraries.

Healthcare Accessibility: Providing menstrual hygiene products, health education workshops, and building sanitation facilities in schools.

Wealth Creation: Supporting vocational training and apprenticeship programs that equip young adults with practical skills to build sustainable careers and businesses.

Relief: Delivering humanitarian support including feeding initiatives, clothing, and assistance for vulnerable populations such as children, widows, and disabled citizens.

Since 2021, UIU has focused its primary community service initiatives on making a significant impact in Nigeria, targeting the most underserved populations. To enhance our efforts, we established a UIUCares office in Enugu State, Nigeria. The office is staffed by three full-time employees who manage and oversee projects in our key focus areas mentioned above, ensuring effective execution and positive change in the community.

1. Nigeria School Scholarship Program - Sponsor the secondary school education for 40 secondary school students in Southeastern Nigeria

Launched in 2022, we carefully selected 20 promising young students in the Enugu area and most recently, in 2024, we have added an additional 20 students from the Anambra area. Our aim is to continue to provide educational assistance and financial support to these 40 secondary school students in eleven (11) schools through termly stipends and one-time annual school fees payments. Additionally, we provide these students with an annual stipend to cover expenses such as uniforms, books, backpacks, and other necessities. We are filled with great enthusiasm for the bright futures that await these students.

The beneficiaries of this scholarship are indigent but brilliant students in these public secondary schools:

Abakpa Girls Secondary School, Capital City Secondary School, City Girls College, Community Secondary School Agulu Awka, Day Secondary School, Girls Secondary School Amaenyi, Government Secondary School, Government Technical College, Igwebuike Grammar School, Kenneth Dike Memorial Secondary School, and Trans Ekulu Girls Secondary School.

2. Technology Program - Provide access to laptops to introduce basic computer knowledge and skills to secondary students in 6 month sessions.
UIUCares offers two six-month sessions annually to eligible students, with the number of participants varying each year. Upon completion, students will be proficient in navigating various computer programs, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, graphic design (Corel Draw) and email. The program started initially as three 12 (twelve) week sessions but has progressed to 6 months per cohort to ensure that all students receive comprehensive training.

We have upgraded our office space to allow for more students to have access to the technology program. in 2025, we had an average of 15 students per cohort. We are in need of more laptops to be able to teach more students. By partnering with us, you can purchase and donate a laptop.

3. Girls Health Program - Provide menstrual hygiene education and sanitary pads for students

The objective of our Girls Health Program is to provide a sustainable, comprehensive education on menstrual health to young girls in secondary schools within the Southeastern region of Nigeria. The Enugu team develops seminars that cover a range of health education topics.

May 2025, 72 students received sanitary packages, and educational sessions in these 3 schools: Kenneth Dike Grammar School Awka, Community Secondary School Agulu-Awka, and Capital `City Secondary School Awka.
November 2025, one of our chapters, UIUDMV, donated personal care packages containing sanitary pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and detergent to 49 students in Ezi Awka Community Secondary School, Awka.

Overall, we have served over 520 girls in this program and hope to develop partnerships to expand this essential program across Nigeria.

4. Apprenticeship program - Training young adults to gain mastery in a skill of their choice and promote future entrepreneurship.

UIUCares Apprenticeship program was launched in 2023; we recognized the tremendous potential that lies in pursuing one's passion and providing training opportunities that can lead to expertise and foster job creation. This initiative pays homage to the rich heritage of "Igba-Boi," a longstanding Igbo tradition that has shaped some of our most accomplished entrepreneurs. Through this program, young individuals can learn a skill of their choice over a specific duration, acquire mastery in that field, and ultimately establish their own businesses, an endeavor known as 'akaoru' in Igbo culture.

In collaboration with our Enugu team, we have carefully selected 5 candidates who will be pursuing apprenticeships in Solar panels, Electricity, Tailoring, and Furniture making. In the past, we have had various trainees in various industries such as: Baking, Sewing, Computer/Phone Repairs, Shoe Making, Graphic Design, Welding, Nylon production, Automobile electrician, and Machinery.

5. Relief Programs - Back to school programs, feeding programs, impact skills programs, prison outreach, world malaria day

2026

The UIUCares team has concluded the Back to School Program in three schools in Nsukka. We were able to positively impact the students of Community Secondary School Ede Oballa, Community Secondary School Nru, and Urban Girls Secondary School Nsukka through the generous and thoughtful donation of exercise books, pens, and mathematical sets. The students were surprised and truly grateful to UIUCares for the donations. Partner with us and supply materials to more schools in igboland.

2025
February 2025, UIUCares successfully conducted an EyeCare Outreach program, benefiting 40 community members in Ndiaga Ugwuaji Akwunanaw. The program provided comprehensive eye examinations and vision correction glasses, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3: Good Health and Well-being.

Our clothing program at Ugbo Umehaa community successfully reached out to 70 individuals, providing them with essential clothing items and shoes. This initiative not only addressed a basic need but also promoted dignity and care, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 1: No Poverty and Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities.

The UIUCares Charity Basketball Game was successfully held on July 5th, 2025, at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. Over 20 kids participated in the event, playing two sets of basketball. The program included distributing basketballs to the kids, with 10 balls given to girls and 10 to boys, and providing meals. The event concluded on a positive note, achieving its objectives of promoting sportsmanship and providing support to the young participants.

2024

The World Malaria 3-Day Program in Enugu State was a resounding success, demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in combating malaria. We provided free antimalarial drugs, 210 insecticide-treated bed nets, and consultations with healthcare professionals to over 200 individuals.

The community participation highlights the importance of ongoing interventions to address malaria challenges in slum areas (Old Artisan Market, Ugbo-Odogwu, and Agu Owa). We appreciate our partners' (EzzyCares Multi-Specialist Hospital and St. Mary Maternity Hospital ) support and look forward to continued collaboration to expand program reach and impact.

6. RESTORATION SERIES

2025

The construction of the sanitation facility at Government Technical College, Owerri was completed in April. This transformative project, sponsored by Ms. Angelica Nwandu and managed by UIUCares Enugu Office, represents a major step toward improving hygiene and sanitation infrastructure for students and staff.

2024

UIUCares built a 10-room toilet facility at Urban Girls Secondary School, Ekwulobia, Anambra State. With a total student population of 950, the school faces a pressing need for improved sanitation facilities to ensure a safe and healthy educational environment for all students and staff. This transformational project was made possible by the incredible generosity of our donor, Ms. Angie Nwandu. Your support empowers these young girls with better health, dignity, and an enhanced learning environment. Thank you, Angie, for inspiring change and making a difference.

This project aligns with a few of United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation speaks directly to the facilities we provide. SDG 4: Quality Education ensures that students learn in a clean and safe environment, while SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure shows our commitment to building long-lasting solutions.

Classroom Renovation of Owerri City Secondary School

Owerri City Secondary School, serving a mixed population of 2,025 boys and girls, faces critical infrastructure challenges that threaten the safety and comfort of students and staff. The school's current condition requires urgent intervention to address security vulnerabilities and structural decay. The proposed project focuses on three key areas of renovation: replacement of iron doors and windows, replacement of leaking roofs and replacing ceilings throughout the school buildings.

1. Replacement of Iron Doors and Windows: Protect school properties from theft and vandalism while fostering a safer atmosphere for academic activities.

2. Ceilings Replacement: Replace damaged or old ceilings with new materials to enhance durability and insulation. Ensure ceilings are installed in a way that prevents further deterioration and reduces exposure to extreme weather.

3. Repair of Leaking Roofs: Remove and replace damaged roofs on school blocks to ensure a more conducive learning environment.

2023

Classroom Renovation
Following the success of our pilot sanitation project in Trans Ekulu in 2023, UIUCares completed a comprehensive renovation of a five-classroom block at Capital City Secondary School in Awka, Anambra State.

Sanitation Programs-Trans Ekulu Girls Secondary School, Enugu

The UIUCares initiative to provide toilets for the 2300 students and staff of Trans Ekulu Girls Secondary School Enugu began in early 2023. The project has been a massive success thanks to donations of our benefactors. This is a benchmark project of UIUCares which we hope to replicate in other local schools. There are many schools in Nigeria that lack the basic necessities for their students. This building contains 10 toilet stalls, 10 sinks, pumps, 2 overhead tanks and a well. We are happy for the long-lasting impact that UIUCares will have at this school for the current students and for many generations to come. This project was completed in July 2023. Pictures below show the progress and final product with a luncheon with the students and some community members.

Our goal was to create a safe and conducive learning environment that fosters growth, creativity, and success for students and teachers. No child should have to attend school under such poor conditions, and we are dedicated to providing the supportive environment every student deserves. The warm reception, heartfelt gratitude, and prayers from the community have deeply touched our hearts. Their excitement and appreciation during these challenging times remind us of the power of unity and compassion.
