What is UNARC? UNARC stands for UN Antiracism Coalition. We are a UN facing civil society coalition composed of over 120 members. We exist to maximize the impact of the “George Floyd Resolution” (HRC resolution 47/21) and to support cross-regional civil society coordination and advocacy. The Coalition seeks to facilitate access and engagement of directly impacted communities and grassroots groups at the UN and to leverage the work of the EMLER mechanism (International Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in the Context of Law Enforcement) and the OHCHR to support national level advocacy. Who is in UNARC? We are composed of members from different parts of the world including directly impacted people, their organizations, representatives of social movements, local organizations/collectives, national, regional and international NGOs and international experts. What is the work of UNARC? Our work focuses on pushing for accountability at the United Nations for systemic racism and police violence against Africans and people of African descent. Specifically, we focus on three UN spaces: UNHRC, EMLER, and OHCHR. The coalition was instrumental in the creation of the EMLER mechanism that has specific and unique powers within the UN with a mandate to solely focus on systemic racism and police violence against Africans and people of African descent. We operate under the assumption that working in coalition and collectively using the United Nations as a tool to drive change is a way to positively affect the realities of black people's lives in terms of their interactions with State security and justice institutions. Why should you support UNARC? In these three operational years we have had many accomplishments (here are a few examples from 2022, 2023 and 2024). We will remain committed to our mission of making the United Nations an accessible space for civil society and advocating in international multilateral spaces for States to be held accountable for violence, excessive use of force, and other human rights violations in the context of law enforcement against Africans and people of African descent.
