Why donate?

We are a small nonprofit running on less than $10,000/year. We are an all-volunteer staff. Funding comes mostly from items people buy on our website store, subscriptions to our community's collaborative learning platform, and direct donations.

In spring 2023, we moved from being a nonprofit program to our very own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This administrative move is very big for us and has been a large administrative expense in both time (volunteer) and funds. Your donation to this page helps us cover our basic operating costs. Our primary (basic) operating costs help us to just maintain our current platforms.

In 2026, we'd like to upgrade at least one of our platforms to improve volunteer and community use-ability of platforms. But we have to meet our goal of basic operating cost expenditures just to exist as an organization before we can seriously consider needed upgrades.

What do we do?

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focusing on education and information for the healthcare system-based acupuncture community. With the goal of improving patient access to acupuncturists' care where they already receive care. For most people in the U.S., the main places they receive healthcare are their local clinics and hospital(s).

Currently, there are several barriers to patients getting access to acupuncturists' care in their local U.S.-based healthcare facilities. We can help with some of these barriers.

Healthcare and hospital organizations are interested in offering acupuncture and acupuncturists' services but have never done it before and are not sure where to start. Our "Are You a Program Manager or Director?" page helps get leaders started with this. It directs them to our resources for program managers, leads, and admin on resources for getting started, such as the resource (with recorded presentation), "How to Hire and Credential Acupuncturists with a focus on Revenue Capture and Clinician Retention." And also includes links to our resources on the list of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to develop, Safety Practices for LAcs, Safety Leads, and Managers, presentations, and more.
Hospital and healthcare system organizations that have acupuncture programs and would like to expand services or streamline access for patients. Besides resources listed in #1, and we have additional resources, such as the Inpatient Acupuncture Programs resource. Also, with the Tier 2 subscription learning (asynchronous and synchronous) platform, colleagues can meet others working across the country and connect with them or resources they have contributed to learning more about different ways to do programs in a variety of organizations (rural, urban, county clinics, federal facilities, academic medical centers, etc.) and variety of patient populations (adult, pediatric, etc.).
- With continued funding, we will be able to continue to develop resources on this based on community feedback.
Learning about health policies that affect patient access to acupuncturists' services and integrative health programs. Our Health Policy Communications Workgroup works on learning about what health policies are affecting access to patient care and creates communication papers and space for presentations and discussions to help us better understand what they are, how they affect care and access, etc. This is a challenging topic that affects care. So, we are supporting a volunteer workgroup that focuses on learning about this and communicating to the community about what it is and its relevance to the work (education/informational).
Identifying knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to be successful in healthcare system-based practice. And identifying KSAs for subspecialty work within the healthcare system-based specialty. Our Employment Practices Workgroup continues to work on this. While this particular topic is woven throughout our work and all our workgroups, it is important for us to have this dedicated workgroup.

We host a virtual learning platform with community discussion (asynchronous and synchronous) for acupuncturist clinicians and program managers working in healthcare system-based practice in the U.S. This community learning platform is also open to students and prospective practitioners interested in working in the field of hospital and healthcare system-based practice.

The community platform helps us to communicate about best practices in the field. It supports space for discussions to identify issues in the field and then a process for developing community-informed solutions to this.

Major resources that our team has created out of this process include:

Telehealth and Virtual Care--How to Pivot during the 2020 Pandemic and Other Unique Situations for Healthcare System-Based Acupuncture Programs. Lessons Learned, Benefits (patients, providers, system), Issues, Examples of Innovation, and Discussion--started with a Telehealth Roundtable Event in June 2020 and asynchronous resources added over time by the community.
The Inaugural Inpatient Acupuncture Conference (Jan 2023)--a live virtual event to jumpstart creating an asynchronous resource that can be added to over time for how to set up inpatient acupuncture programs, what some of the current inpatient programs look like, how to fund and maintain these programs, etc. The live event also got input from speakers and others working in the inpatient acupuncture field to talk about what knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) they recommend for being successful in their inpatient setting. Several subspecialties were represented, including pediatric care (including children's hospitals), mother-baby unit care, intensive care unit, and inpatient behavioral health. Post-event recordings, pdfs, resources, discussion space, and room for additional resources is set up within our Tier 2 subscription to the community learning platform.

Resources we have worked on with limited funding in 2024

Safety Practices Workgroup--resource work and upcoming 2024-2025 presentations from this workgroup on what they have learned about KSAs, cultural communication, and more for acupuncturist clinicians, safety leads working in acupuncture programs, and managers working in healthcare system-based settings. With a focus on those who want to learn how to communicate to the line of management about what safety practices an acupuncturist does and what that looks like through the lens of the High-Reliability Organization (HRO) system. The HRO system in healthcare focuses on safety and transparency, using quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI) systems and processes to improve safety for patients and healthcare workers in the workplace. Have submitted this presentation to be able to offer continuing education credit (safety/ethics category) in the near future. At the end of 2024, we submitted a 2 hour live virtual course on "Intro to Safety Practices for LAcs," that was approved by NCCAOM for 2 PDAs, Safety category. So, we will be offering this course several times in year 2025. Please see our website's event page for upcoming sessions.

Health Policy Communications Workgroup. See the workgroup's website article for current work in 2024, including participation in the fall 2024 "Talk Turkey about Low Back Pain" collaborative social media community outreach campaign (Nov 2024) to improve communication about common myths vs. realities in back pain care and standards of care for diagnosing and treating back pain in the U.S.

In 2025, we have a couple of sessions on "Medicare and the Healthcare System LAc and Acupuncture Program: Current Issues, Barriers, Lessons Learned, and Success Stories."
