New, small project donation ask for April-May 2026

Goal: $250 by April 30th, 2026

Why and How: On April 25th-26th, 2026, the American Society of Acupuncturists (ASA) conference is coming to Minnesota and featuring some healthcare system-based acupuncturists and programs. We'd like to support our board president, Megan, to attend this conference.

We've set a goal to raise $250 between now (early April) and April 30th to help offset some of the cost of the conference ticket. Megan is covering her travel and per diem, and most of the conference ticket cost. The full ticket price to attend the conference is just under $500. She's going as SOHHA (our organization)'s representative to connect with colleagues working in the hospital and healthcare system-based practice space and spread the word about our 100% volunteer-led community education resource work at SOHHA. Megan currently volunteers an average of 40 hours/month for SOHHA. She says she will be sharing her insights from the conference on our learning platform, email newsletter, and social media.

Any amount raised over the $250 goal will go toward SOHHA's basic operating costs. The 2026 basic operating costs funding goal is to raise $15,000 between Jan. 1st, 2026, and Sept. 1st, 2026.

Why donate?

We are a small nonprofit running on less than $5,000/year. We are an all-volunteer staff. Funding comes mostly from items people buy on our website store, subscriptions to our community's collaborative learning platform, and direct donations.

In spring 2023, we moved from being a nonprofit program to our very own 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. This administrative move is very big for us and has been a large administrative expense in both time (volunteer) and funds. Your donation to this page helps us cover our basic operating costs. Our primary (basic) operating costs help us to just maintain our current platforms.

In 2026, we'd like to upgrade at least one of our platforms to improve volunteer and community usability of platforms. So we have increased oor donation goal to $15,000 to cover basic operating costs plus the estimates for upgrading and the increased costs to maintain those upgrades.

What do we do?

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focusing on education and information for the healthcare system-based acupuncture community. With the goal of improving patient access to acupuncturists' care where they already receive care. For most people in the U.S., the main places they receive healthcare are their local clinics and hospital(s).

Currently, there are several barriers to patients getting access to acupuncturists' care in their local U.S.-based healthcare facilities. We can help with some of these barriers.

Healthcare and hospital organizations are interested in offering acupuncture and acupuncturists' services but have never done it before and are not sure where to start. Our "Are You a Program Manager or Director?" page helps get leaders started with this. It directs them to our resources for program managers, leads, and admin on resources for getting started, such as the resource (with recorded presentation), "How to Hire and Credential Acupuncturists with a focus on Revenue Capture and Clinician Retention." It also includes links to our resources on the list of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to develop, Safety Practices for LAcs, Safety Leads, and Managers, presentations, and more.
Hospital and healthcare system organizations that have acupuncture programs and would like to expand services or streamline access for patients. Besides the resources listed in #1, we have additional resources, such as the Inpatient Acupuncture Programs resource. Also, with the Tier 2 subscription learning (asynchronous and synchronous) platform, colleagues can meet others working across the country and connect with them or resources they have contributed to learning more about different ways to do programs in a variety of organizations (rural, urban, county clinics, federal facilities, academic medical centers, etc.) and variety of patient populations (adult, pediatric, etc.).
- With continued funding, we will be able to continue to develop resources on this based on community feedback.
Learning about health policies that affect patient access to acupuncturists' services and integrative health programs. Our Health Policy Communications Workgroup works on learning about what health policies are affecting access to patient care and creates communication papers and space for presentations and discussions to help us better understand what they are, how they affect care and access, etc. This is a challenging topic that affects care. So, we support a volunteer workgroup that focuses on learning about this and communicating to the community what it is and its relevance to the work (education/informational).
Identifying knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to be successful in healthcare system-based practice. And identifying KSAs for subspecialty work within the healthcare system-based specialty. Our Employment Practices Workgroup continues to work on this. While this topic is woven throughout our work and across all our workgroups, it is important for us to have a dedicated workgroup.

We host a virtual learning platform with community discussion (asynchronous and synchronous) for acupuncturist clinicians and program managers working in healthcare system-based practice in the U.S. This community learning platform is also open to students and prospective practitioners interested in working in the field of hospital and healthcare system-based practice.

The community platform helps us to communicate about best practices in the field. It supports space for discussions to identify issues in the field and then a process for developing community-informed solutions to these issues.

Major resources that our team has created out of this community-engagement-intensive process in the past include:

Telehealth and Virtual Care--How to Pivot during the 2020 Pandemic and Other Unique Situations for Healthcare System-Based Acupuncture Programs. Lessons Learned, Benefits (patients, providers, system), Issues, Examples of Innovation, and Discussion--started with a Telehealth Roundtable Event in June 2020, and asynchronous resources were added over time by the community.
The Inaugural Inpatient Acupuncture Conference (Jan 2023)--a live virtual event to jumpstart creating an asynchronous resource that can be added to over time for how to set up inpatient acupuncture programs, what some of the current inpatient programs look like, how to fund and maintain these programs, etc. The live event also gathered input from speakers and the community working in the inpatient acupuncture field on the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) they recommend for success in their inpatient setting. Several subspecialties were represented, including pediatric care (including children's hospitals), mother-baby unit care, intensive care unit, and inpatient behavioral health. Post-event resources include presentation recordings, PDFs, resources, discussion space, and room for additional resources, which are set up and available to access within our Tier 2 subscription to the community learning platform.

Resources we are working on with limited funding so far

Safety Practices Workgroup

This workgroup's resource work over 2024-2026 included preparing resources and giving live, virtual presentations, one approved for continuing education (2 PDAs, safety category, from NCCAOM/NCBAHM). The CEU/PDA course we are also offering in 2026 is "Introduction to Safety Practices for Acupuncturists, Safety Leads, and Program Managers." The live online course approved for continuing education, "Intro to Safety Practices," created by this workgroup, is an overview of what they have learned about KSAs, cultural communication, and more for acupuncturist clinicians, safety leads working in acupuncture programs, and managers working in healthcare system-based settings. With a focus on those who want to learn how to communicate to the line of management about what safety practices an acupuncturist does and what that looks like through the lens of the High-Reliability Organization (HRO) system. The HRO system in healthcare focuses on safety and transparency, using quality assurance (QA) and quality improvement (QI) systems and processes to enhance safety for patients and healthcare workers. Have submitted this presentation to be able to offer continuing education credit (safety/ethics category) in the near future. Besides the live virtual course, the workgroup also curates two major asynchronous learning resource topics in the learning platform:

Health Policy Communications Workgroup

See the workgroup's website article (linked in the heading) for past work, including participation in the fall 2024 "Talk Turkey about Low Back Pain" collaborative social media community outreach campaign (Nov 2024) to improve communication about common myths vs. realities in back pain care and standards of care for diagnosing and treating back pain in the U.S.

In 2025, we hosted two live, virtual sessions (free to attend; donations welcome) on "Medicare and the Healthcare System LAc and Acupuncture Program: Current Issues, Barriers, Lessons Learned, and Success Stories." The post-session materials (presentation information and notes) are available in the "Issues" webinar series group on the learning platform.

This workgroup also supports a representative to participate in the Pain Collaborative to Advance Equitable Value-Based Solutions, which brings together leaders across a variety of organizations and healthcare professions in the U.S. who "are leaders, innovators, catalyzers for change, and subject matter experts who agree that deeper collaboration will expedite access to quality pain care."

Employment Practices Workgroup

This workgroup hosts the "Job Announcements in the Field" topic-focused group in the learning platform. These include sharing publicly posted job announcements from a variety of organizations over the past 5+ years. While many are for acupuncturist clinicians, some are for healthcare leadership positions in the field, from managing programs, to leading research in the field. This topic-focused learning resource also has a series on "what to expect as an employee clinician in a healthcare system" and other "how to be an employee" resources that the community has created.

In 2025, the poster of our pre-survey work for the Healthcare System-Based Acupuncturists Employment Practices Data Survey was accepted to display with other research poster at the spring 2025 Society of Acupuncture Research (SAR) conference in California. You can read more about that here.

This survey work is long-term work we plan to continue, but it has some major outgoing costs and important support connections the nonprofit needs to connect with to move forward with next steps. Stay tuned to our newsletter for updates on this multi-year project focus and future project-specific fundraising campaigns. This workgroup also supported documentation survey work and research paper collaboration with the Society of Acupuncture Research's Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health. A paper related to this work was published this past year and was recently made open access, "Artificial Intelligence in Acupuncture: Recommendations...." See our LinkedIn post about it here. While we already have an asynchronous discussion space set up for it on our learning platform, we are making plans to coordinate and host live, virtual discussions on this paper with at least one (and hopefully more) of its authors later this year. Completed work from this workgroup includes:

The "How to Hire & Credential LAcs in Your Healthcare System: Revenue Capture and Clinician Retention,” online asynchronous resource, including presentation recording. This information was first presented in June 2022 by the workgroup in a public webinar. This resource is available in the Tier 2 subscription to the learning platform. This is also featured on our website's Program Manager/Director landing page.

The “Team-based Clinical Care Work as a Healthcare System LAc. Cultural Competencies, KSAs, Challenges & Success Stories; Metrics & Data Collection,” resource. This information was first presented publicly by the SOHHA Employment Practices Workgroup team at the May 2023 Society of Acupuncture Research (SAR) conference in New York City, NY. The team structured it as a presentation + interactive case study workshop with attendees. It introduced the workgroup's resource work on the team care model, how it works, and the KSAs identified for successfully working in the team care model. More resources on this are available in our learning platform. With time, volunteer bandwidth, and funding, the workgroup would like to continue building out resources on this topic.
