You could be a hero for children around the world with aggressive brain cancers. Over the years, the Children's Brain Tumor Tissue Consortium (CBTTC) has supported over 150 pediatric brain tumor researcher projects with the goal to collaboratively tackle the leading cause of cancer death in children. The CBTTC has made amazing strides in this effort, growing its international network of collaborating member institutions to >18, collecting of over 60,000 biospecimens, launching the first-ever Pediatric Brain Tumor Atlas (PBTA), and now developing personalized treatment support through clinical trials.

According to the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States (CBTRUS), an estimated 87,240 new cases of primary malignant and non-malignant brain and central nervous system (CNS) tumors are expected to be diagnosed in the U.S. by the end of 2020. Nearly 4,000 of those new tumor diagnoses will be applied to children under the age of 14. An additional 12,090 new cases of brain and CNS tumors will be found in Adolescents and Young Adults (AYA) by the end of this year.

Brain and CNS tumors are the most prevalent form of pediatric cancer in children under age 19, and are currently the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among children and adolescents. Yet only 4% of all federal funding for cancer research is devoted to the study of all forms of childhood cancer.

This lack of public awareness and federal support for the study of pediatric brain tumors has contributed to a woefully low amount of progress made in treatments for children over the last several decades. In the past 30 years, only four FDA-approved drugs – and one medical device – have been developed to treat all brain tumors. There has never been a drug developed and approved to specifically treat malignant brain tumors in children. Furthermore, some of the deadliest types of childhood brain tumors have no effective treatment options for children.

The CBTTC is a premier organization that has finally brought to bear the collaborative architecture we needed to advance medical science until every child has a cure. They are making progress, but face a substantial delay if we can't get the sites fully funded by July 1st. You can help by picking a hospital and helping us reach their goal.

Due in part to the current pandemic, CBTTC needs your help to support their eight primary member sites.

These sites are spread out across the continental US and serve patients and families from all over the United States. The CBTTC provides $75,000 to each member site each year to cover expenses associated with enrolling and providing a representation of 75% of all brain tumor tissue samples that come through their operating room annually.

No single hospital sees enough patients with one tumor type to create truly meaningful data sets. The collaboration and data sharing amongst CBTTC member institutions provides researchers with access to vital data they wouldn't otherwise see.
