Join us for Lunch Time Learning: Prison and Mental Health for Deaf/Disabled Communities! This event is focused on the importance of supporting deaf/disabled people impacted by carceral systems and access to mental health services during and after incarceration.

You’ll learn from Esperanza, HEARD’s Re-Entry Support Program Director and Grace, Licensed Social Worker from My Deaf Therapy. This event is also featuring a special guest: Kevin, who is a deaf formerly incarcerated person, mentor and Public Education Team (PET) graduate! PET is a communal space that HEARD organizes for deaf/disabled formerly incarcerated folks to learn about practicing harm reduction, reimagining safety, developing an abolitionist framework, and more.

We will answer some questions like:

Why is it important for mental health clinicians and social service providers to be aware of the struggles and violence that currently and formerly incarcerated deaf/disabled people face?
Why is it challenging for a formerly incarcerated deaf/disabled person to trust a mental health service provider?
What are some disconnects in the continuum of culturally affirming, anticarceral organizations sustaining the norm of disability mass incarceration?
