JAFUTA FOUNDATION – WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT GOAT PROJECT

Building Sustainable Livelihoods Through Boer Goat Farming

Jafuta Foundation is proud to highlight the success and expansion of our Women’s Empowerment Goat Project - an initiative designed to promote economic independence, sustainable agriculture, and long-term resilience among women in rural communities. Launched with the goal of empowering 11 women through livestock production, the project has rapidly grown into a thriving model of community-driven development.

The program began with 2 pure-bred Boer bucks and 13 does, provided alongside a full year of close mentorship. To ensure strong foundations, the goats were initially housed at the Foundation’s premises, allowing for hands-on training in goat husbandry, breeding management, disease control, and business planning. After twelve months of growth and learning, the herd has increased to 28 healthy goats, and the beneficiaries have taken the impressive step of constructing an additional pen using their own resources - showing commitment, ownership, and readiness for scale. The pen needs proper fencing to make it strong and durable.

The project now enters Phase Two, a critical milestone:

The women will assume full operational control of the goat enterprise, transitioning from trainees to independent livestock farmers. Jafuta Foundation will continue supporting the project by serving as the breeding centre, maintaining two bucks and two does to ensure genetic diversity, prevent inbreeding, and consistently improve the quality of the goats available to the community.

To secure long-term sustainability and allow the women’s cooperative to fully capitalize on this momentum, the project now seeks support for essential inputs that will directly improve herd quality, productivity, and market value.

Funding Needs for 2026

A pure-bred Kalahari buck to strengthen herd genetics and expand market opportunities – US$800
Feed for 30 goats to maintain optimal growth and breeding productivity – US$300 per month
Veterinary services for disease prevention and herd health management – US$100 per month
$850 for the Goat Pen fencing

These investments will significantly enhance the cooperative’s ability to scale production, improve goat quality, and generate reliable income for the 11 participating women and their families. Donor support at this stage will have a profound, lasting impact - transforming a growing pilot project into a fully sustainable, community-owned enterprise that uplifts households and strengthens local food security.

ABOUT THE JAFUTA FOUNDATION

The Jafuta Foundation is a non-profit organisation focused on helping humans and animals alike by creating and maintaining equilibrium between community, wildlife and conservation, education and culture. A catalyst for bringing together the private sector, local authorities, communities and protected area management agencies, the Foundation forms an integral point through which to channel funds or assistance to any agency or cause with 100% guaranteed transparency. The Foundation is registered in U.S.A. and Zimbabwe with the Jafuta Foundation Centres of Hope, located in the rural areas on the edge of the Zambezi National Park, forming the main administrative base from which most projects are run, along with the women and youth self empowerment project, Batoka Creatives. The Centres of Hope also act as a hub from which to interact with the public and to host workshops that benefit local communities and wildlife. Various other locations are dotted in and around Victoria Falls and the surrounding parks and forests, with the majority of the work being carried out in the Hwange West area and the southern section of the Victoria Falls National Park.
