Story
Sam, due February 4th, was born via emergency C-section December 6th, 2019 and after spending 33 days in the NICU signs of his in utero stroke were found and his white matter brain damage (periventricular leukomalacia) was confirmed via MRI. Two days later we were released from the NICU with a mountain of discharge paperwork, an inconclusive diagnosis, and a beautiful five pound baby boy.
Our family has experienced first hand the way a complex medical diagnosis can alter the course of life for an individual, an entire family and the whole community. Sam received his Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy diagnosis on September 13, 2021. With this diagnosis come challenges for Sam and for his mobility. Our family is quickly growing out of our beloved truck and are needing to transition to a mobility vehicle.
We are seeking to raise $35,000 with an indeterminate timeline to put towards the purchase of a mobility vehicle for our family. We will be working with a mobility van dealer here in Omaha to locate a vehicle that can be converted or an already converted vehicle that will work with Sam’s current and future mobility needs. At this point Sam uses a manual wheelchair, it is likely in the future that he will use an electric wheelchair, this is part of our planning for this vehicle.
The average cost of a mobility van or a van with conversion is around $80,000. We have a private donation of $30,000, and will be able to utilize financing from Nebraska Medicaid to cover up to $15,000 of the cost of the vehicle. We will be looking for additional funding from the Easter Seals however it is not guaranteed. We are hoping to raise $35,000 to assist in the purchase of this vehicle.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, any amount will help Sam reach his goals!
