AIDS IS NOT OVER – 39 million people have died from AIDS related causes and 36 million people are living with HIV worldwide today. Since our founding, we have never stopped working with artists, curators, art institutions, and community organizations to produce publications, exhibitions, public events, oral histories, art empowerment workshops, and AIDS-awareness artist projects. An investment in Visual AIDS generates life-affirming artwork and builds vital dialogue and cultural contributions around HIV/AIDS today. Just as artists continue to give their talents to raise AIDS awareness, support of our work impacts the creative process and ensures that history is not lost. Our legacy has included iconic and national projects like the Red Ribbon Project and Day With(out) Art, and today we reach over 200,000 people annually as we continue to pivot to more online and accessible programming for audiences nationally and globally. 40 years into the AIDS Epidemic, we remain deeply rooted in our history and mission. We produce over 130 programs, screenings, and public events each year; we have generated 30 publications since 2000; we have commissioned 57 short films since 2014 through Day With(out) Art—held annually on World AIDS Day since 1989; and we have given $670,000 in direct grants to artists living with HIV since 1996. Today, the Visual AIDS Archive and Registry includes 25,600 physical slides and over 18,600 digital images from 945 living artists and estates. Our archival holdings constitute the only extant historical materials for many of these artists.
