The Fishtown Neighbors Association is looking for support for a 2024 community project!

Earlier this year, we put out a pedestrian safety survey to the neighborhood, and identified a number of intersections of particular concern for our neighbors. With that survey, we compiled an application for a Vision Zero "slow zone" application. Despite having the best score in the city for neighbor input, we were not selected because Fishtown is safer than other neighborhoods. Unfortunately, we're not safe enough!

Many of our neighborhood crosswalks have been completely worn away. Despite repeated 311 requests from our board members, these crosswalks remain unpainted. We have decided to take mattters into our own hands. We want to bring attention to the issue of pedestrian safety with art crosswalks.

In November 2023, we did a pilot "art crosswalk" at Frankford and Columbia ave, across from the post office. We are raising money to do another in Spring 2024!

We looked into the data on pedestrian strikes and found that art crosswalks have fewer pedestrian strikes than a "normal" crosswalk. While some safety advocates question the lasting impact of this protection, this study started with painted crosswalks. We're starting with almost-totally-gone crosswalks here in Fishtown! Leaving crosswalks empty is unacceptable, and we will not wait for the city to fill them in (but we'll keep asking!).
