Grounds Krewe is a New Orleans–based nonprofit on a mission to make Mardi Gras more sustainable, inclusive, and locally rooted. Each year, we work to reduce waste and uplift local makers by creating eco-friendly, community-powered throws and recycling programs that keep the spirit of Carnival alive while protecting the city we love. From our Sustainable Throw Catalog to the Recycle Dat program, we’re proving that good times and green values can roll together.

About Our Programs:

The Sustainable Throw Catalog addresses the environmental impact of Mardi Gras by providing eco-friendly parade throws. As an alternative to imported, disposable, plastic throws like beads and other trinkets, these throws are designed to be biodegradable, functional, consumable, and/or made from recycled materials. Since its inception, the catalog has successfully assembled and sold over 760,000 throws, highlighting a significant shift in throw culture towards sustainability.
Recycle Dat! is a citywide Mardi Gras recycling initiative that brings together public, private, and nonprofit partners to create a cleaner, more sustainable Carnival season. The program diverts tons of aluminum, glass, and parade throws from landfills through staffed recycling stations, incentive programs, and creative initiatives like Mardi Bar Wars, Recycle World, and the Re-Cyclists Marching Krewe. In 2025, Recycle Dat! kept more than 73,000 pounds of waste out of landfills!
