The Common Acre begins with the soil. We reconnect humans with nature through the medium of food and seek to restore a living food system that feeds our minds and nourishes our communities. With Indigenous landscape Designer Demarus Tevuk, TCA is redirecting some of our collaborative programs to center Coast Salish Native plants and first foods. This is part of a broader effort aiming to make our programs more inclusive to local Urban Indigenous and Coast Salish peoples.

A private landowner invited our staff and partners to gather camas bulbs, a Coast Salish first food that typically grows in prairies and wetlands. We will take a trip in October to gather the bulbs, and afterward, transplant the bulbs with BIPOC community members at our site “The Green Line.” The Green Line is a community stewardship project taking place in the transmission corridor of Seattle City Light in upper Rainier Beach. This is the space under high-voltage power lines. Previously, it was primarily inhabited by invasive weeds.

We are excited to connect with our partners to build a camas prairie.

We know that together we can initiate an Urban Indigenous-led camas prairie restoration project in Seattle - this is where you come in!

Can you help us join Indigenous Food Sovereignty efforts - by supporting our Camas Planting campaign?

Sponsor a camas bulb for $50.00, to help attract Native Bees in the spring and help build an Urban Indigenous food system in South Seattle.
