We are accepting applications for homeless and at risk of homelessness young adults and we need your help. This fundraiser will allow us to provide essential items for young adults upon arrival and support them as they transition into independent living.

Youth homelessness is a serious problem in Texas, especially in places like Houston and Fort Bend County. Young people in these situations particularly those 18-24 who are aging out of foster care, young parents and all other young adults facing unique challenges. Unlike adults, homeless youth are often more vulnerable to mental health issues, substance abuse, and exploitation. Across the U.S., it's estimated that over 4.2 million young people experience homelessness each year, according to the National Center for Housing and Child Welfare. To address this, we need focused support and resources that meet the specific needs of these young people.

Current Programs in Fort Bend County and Gaps

While there are some shelters and initiatives in Fort Bend County and nearby areas that provide services for homeless youth, they often don’t fully meet the unique needs of young people between the ages of 18-24. Many shelters are geared towards adults and lack the specialized resources and support that young people require. For instance, Covenant House Texas and Montrose Grace Place in Houston offer critical services to homeless youth, but these resources are limited in reach and often don’t extend into Fort Bend County. Parks Youth Ranch in Fort Bend County offers a shelter for ages 7-17, which excludes young adults ages 18-24.

This gap in youth-specific services means that many young people are left without access to safe, appropriate shelter and programs just for them. Existing shelters may not have the resources to address the educational, employment, and mental health needs that are important for young people trying to build stable, independent lives. Additionally, homeless youth are often harder to reach because of factors like mistrust, stigma, and fear, which can prevent them from seeking help through traditional shelter systems.

This is where YETS comes in.

The funds will be used to enhance and expand the services offered through the BUTC Youth Emergency Transitional Shelter (YETS), ensuring that young adults (ages 18-24) in Fort Bend County experiencing homelessness have access to safe housing, essential resources, and comprehensive support services. Specifically, the funds will be allocated towards:

Immediate Needs Provision – Supplying food, clean clothing, hygiene products, and other essentials to meet the basic needs of residents upon arrival.
Mental Health Services – Providing trauma-informed therapy sessions led by licensed clinicians to support the emotional and psychological well-being of residents.
Case Management & Life Skills Training – Strengthening individualized case management services to help residents develop care plans, secure stable housing, and gain essential life skills, including financial literacy and job readiness.
Educational & Employment Support – Expanding resources for job placement, career readiness, and academic advancement, ensuring residents gain the skills needed for long-term independence.
Transitional Housing Assistance – Supporting residents in securing permanent housing by covering initial rental costs, deposits, and working with local landlords and housing partners.
Shelter Operations & Staff Training – Ensuring YETS remains a safe, well-maintained environment with highly trained staff who can provide the best possible care and guidance to residents.

By securing this funding, we will directly impact the lives of vulnerable young adults, equipping them with the tools, support, and stability they need to transition successfully into independent living.

Our long-term goal is to expand the Youth Emergency & Transitional Shelter (YETS) program into additional counties within the next 12 months, providing critical support to homeless youth ages 18-24.
