The Genspace Biomaterials Studio supports artists in materials research and mentorship. Our community collaborates with microorganisms to innovate materials for a more circular and regenerative world. Through this incubator program, artists will gain mentorship from the Genspace community, trained scientists, and our lab. Culminating with an exhibition featuring 15 artists, plus workshops coinciding with NYC 2025 Climate Week.

Our fundraising goals:
1. Establish an incubator to support artists exploring biomaterials.
2. Offer artists a platform to showcase their bioart.
3. Inform the public about biomaterials through community sharing and workshops. Provide artists with a stage to showcase their bioart.

As artists seek alternatives to today’s petrochemicals, GBS provides a space for experimenting with living materials. Biomaterials represent collaborations between organisms synthesized into forms utilized for art, products, medicine, and construction. These innovative composites leverage natural systems to generate circular and regenerative materials. We collaborate with fungi, bacteria, and other organisms to reimagine our art. GBS features a working recipe book filled with procedures for bioplastics, fungal composites, SCOBY leathers, biothreads, and more. At this time of fluctuating federal support, we must unite to maintain the momentum of our climate goals by bolstering the science and art community.
