Building SEL That Finally Speaks to Gifted Students

Gifted students feel deeply, think differently, and experience the world with intensity. But when it comes to social-emotional learning (SEL), they’re too often left out of the conversation—or worse, handed one-size-fits-all content that doesn’t fit who they are.

Thinkering Fellow Kelsey, a veteran educator with over 20 years in the classroom, is changing that.

Her capstone project—Kaleidoscope Learning—is creating the first SEL curriculum designed specifically for gifted learners. It’s identity-affirming, metaphor-rich, developmentally responsive, and tailored to help students navigate the complexities of being gifted in a world that rarely understands them.

🎯 The Problem

Most SEL programs were never built for gifted learners.

They assume neurotypical development
They prioritize compliance over curiosity
They overlook sensitivity, creativity, and asynchronous growth
They fail to reflect gifted students' real emotional needs

As a result, gifted students are often misunderstood, mislabeled, or emotionally isolated—especially those from marginalized communities.

Kelsey has seen this firsthand. And she’s building the solution.

💡 The Project

Kaleidoscope Learning is an SEL curriculum that embraces the whole gifted child.

Each module uses metaphor and visual storytelling to guide students through:

Identity development
Emotional regulation
Social connection and reflection
Self-confidence and voice
Cultural and cognitive diversity

Designed for small group, self-guided, or classroom integration, the curriculum includes:

Digital lessons built in Articulate 360
Student-facing materials with educator & family tools
A continuum-based framework personalized to each student’s growth level
Extensions for use in gifted pull-outs, homerooms, or at home
