The U.S.S.V. Harvey Milk

The U.S.S.V. Harvey Milk is an internationally noted, award‑winning wooden Lemsteraak (Dutch sailing barge). Her design is a scaled interpretation of the Dutch Royal Yacht, the Groene Draak (“Green Dragon”).

Built in Holland in 1980, she was transported to the United States, where she eventually fell into neglect and disrepair. In 2021 she was offered for sale.

Project Valor Sailing, a Provincetown‑based nonprofit serving veterans, in cooperation with The Harvey Milk Foundation, proudly announces the launch of the U.S.S.V. Harvey Milk in Summer 2026 (exact date pending vessel completion and weather).

Event Overview

The celebration will begin with the vessel’s arrival in Provincetown Harbor, accompanied by a military flyover.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Adam Howard, Founder of Project Valor Sailing, followed by a Benediction and Blessing of the vessel by clergy.

Before the keynote address, dignitaries from both Provincetown and our sister city, San Francisco, will offer remarks. An Open Boat will allow public visitation, with groups limited to six at a time for safety.

All craft, food, and entertainment vendors are warmly invited to set up booths and conduct sales within designated event areas. A suggested donation of twenty‑five dollars per vendor is appreciated. All required Town permits must be obtained.

Event photographers will take portraits aboard the vessel for inclusion in the Harvey Milk Launch Souvenir Booklet.

Advertising opportunities for businesses are available at rates comparable to the Portuguese Festival Book. Advance advertising sales are now open.

The Harvey Milk sails operate entirely on donations, supporting and serving veterans from all backgrounds.

The event will conclude with a ticketed VIP sunset sail aboard the Harvey Milk, accompanied by a larger party boat to ensure optimal viewing.
